England V India (5th test) Old Trafford

'The IPL would have a lot to do with this' - analysis

BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew

This is quite bizarre because last night the players all passed their PCR tests. We went to bed thinking the match would go ahead.

I suspect the IPL would have a lot to do with this. It starts in 10 days' time. The players are on huge contacts. The IPL is worth £300m to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

They are desperate to protect their product and the players protect their contracts. This stands to cost the ECB £20m, one assumes there would be some negotiations about that with the BCCI.

It is a shame Covid has interfered with a brilliant series.

Nail on the head
Why would there be negotiations with the ECB over the 20 million? Can I negotiate with the ECB over the cost of my 4 days of cricket lost at Durham due to their incompetence? Nah thought not. Balls to them
There were stories back in May that they wanted the 5th test moved or cancelled. Covid is an excuse, they never had any interest on playing it
Covid is a great excuse now for many. ECB and ICC have bottled it, and this will continue now.

England win the series. India refused to field a team for all five tests, which is the minimum requirement. Playing the fifth day at the Oval with confirmed Covid cases never seemed to bother them, so it's clearly a case of them refusing to complete the series.

Fancy that, India getting their own way. They fear cases could spread, yet cases could of spread for any of the four tests played so far.

Kohli will come out and say they really wanted to play n all, he's an absolute joke

Some suggesting they can play the final test next summer during their white ball tour, wouldn’t surprise me if the ECB agree to something like that

No one should be surprised by what has happened today as the precedent was established on August 28 when the Durham v Surrey game was called off.

While it passed off without much comment in the media or on this forum ( save the Durham diehards) no doubt because 'it's only County Championship cricket' it has become crystal clear that some people high up were taking more than a passing interest in the events.
