This thread has turned into the Internet forum equivalent of Bethlem Royal Hospital, more commonly known as Bedlam - the place where ordinary members of the public could, upon payment, go and have a laugh at the insane.
The only difference is that he’s not insane.

That is the thing I find the strangest. Dismiss all known science and mathematics as invalid and just bollocks, then say no proof, then puts all his stock into something with no proof.

I read the replies like the one this morning where if you lived on a globe you couldn't fill a bath with water and think this must be someone just taking the piss. But if it was, that is someone who has spend years, writing a lot day after day, producing mental answers for everything and rewriting physics, chemistry and biology to fit his 'musings'.

If real then this is one of the stupidest people I've "met". A few of us have tried from the most basic level to explain something step by step and always fail at the very first hurdle. Almost to the level of "you know on a sunny day, the sky is blue?", said when expecting that to be the easy bit before you take a deep breath and get into the tricky stuff, and you get things to the level of "no it is not blue, it is really some other colour that I will not say but you have been told time and time again it is blue and so now that is all you can see. I used to think it was blue...." then half a page later he stops.

If just a WUM account, then there is someone out there who has invested hours in a fake internet identity making strangers think they are a dribbling moron.

Some days I think this is so stupid it can't be real then others I look at the amount of effort and think, surely nobody is that invested in making a fake? The other SMB WUMs just throw in the odd one liner, probably a cut and paste job, then run.

Yup - like I’ve said on the Trump threads when met with the same dilemma of “Is this bloke a dribbling idiot or is he just pretending to be a dribbling idiot?” The end result is the same. He appears to be a dribbling idiot and that’s enough for me!

Just look at his dismissal of a globe based on planes maintaining level flight. Imagine driving on a straight road in flat terrain. The steering wheel would be straight up ‘12 o’ clock’. Now imagine negotiating a very shallow curve - say one with a radius of a mile. You’d barely have to adjust the steering wheel just a tiny fraction off 12 o’ clock to complete the curve.

Now imagine moving the road example above 90 degrees so we’re in a plane not a car, and negotiationg the curve of the earth not a shallow bend in the road. The radius of that arc is the radius of the earth plus the height of the plane, so about 3900 miles plus another 35 000 feet. Imagine the fraction of a degree off ‘true’ you’d have to adjust to maintain level flight over a distance of say the flight I’m about to take from Tampa to DC, which is 920 miles. @DaveH I think you said you already calculated this adjustment to be miniscule but our resident dribbler seems unable to wrap his head around that very simple example, and that’s before we even add the effect of [non existent!] gravity.

Like I said, it’s best just to scroll past the absolute cobblers he posts and just enjoy the other contributions!

I think you are misunderstanding what I say. There is clear proof that the world is a globe, detailed over and over again on these pages. It just is a globe. I can offer that proof to a large number of people and I have a few techniques I've picked up for explaining things which would help a lot of people understand. But there are some people who I just can't find common ground with or know how to explain it in their term. If the earth is a globe or not and if there is proof is one thing, but the validity of that proof does not depend on being able to explain it to someone with a similar IQ to a chicken pie.

I do think the whole nose dipping argument is the daftest one. If the earth was a disk with the north pole in the middle and the south pole becoming the south ring round the earth, then east to west becomes concentric circles. So apparently pilots don't constantly dip the nose of the plane to fly south so the earth is a disk, fine. But by the same argument, a pilot flying east to west would constantly have to bank right or they would eventually reach the south pole. They can't have it both ways. They say that you would never fly in a circle east to west, fine, but that means some long haul flights take some seriously strange routes, like over the north pole going from Rio to Australia.

But the bloody minded response you get is that the first part is true because of free thinking and not brainwashed like us. The second part is not true because of reasons.

Just done a quick google, and it says with a viewing field of 60° or wider you'd be able to detect the curvature of the earth from 35k feet.

Weather balloons can go as high as 24 miles before they burst.
