England vs India (fourth test) The Oval

Day 5 sold out and on a Monday  Anyone know the last time that happened over here ( especially on the day before?) What a day tomorrow is going to be

Ive got my eye trained on viagogo - haven’t seen a pair of adult tickets for under £135 (each!) since before 7pm. And these are the £20 face value ones, cheapest in the house usually.

Crackers mate, probably helps that it’s in London but still crackers. If you’re serious about going you should pick some up outside the ground quite easily for a better price.

Wish I was there tomorrow

life cock up
300 seems just too much consider Kohli can slow it down
Think we will definitely get 80 overs
291/80 = 3.63
All about if we can get into a position come tea where we need no more than 120 ideally with 6 wickets left at least

Not expecting many home fans in the ground tomorrow seeing as Monday is a work day...

Hopefully can get 85 in depending on how we bat. If we lose 3 or more before lunch it will kill the chance of a positive England result. Hopefully we get to tea and all 4 results are still a possiblity!

Interesting that we chased 350+ in the Ashes to win, and 277 just last year against Pakistan

Both scenarios led by good 1 ball chasers in Stokes then Buttler. I'd say its unlikely but its food for thought, sometimes it suits certain players.

Woakes was brilliant in that chase against Pakistan and has done well in a few odi chases over the years, would be tempted to bump him the order a bit

Agree with this. It's easier to rein it in than accelerate as well. No need to go gung ho, it's just over 3 an over. So like you've said, go for 1's and 2's and rotate the strike. We've already got past the new ball. Then if we start to lose wickets we reassess.
Yeah that’s the way I have always looked at cricket, you look to draw a game or think about drawing a game after plan A has not gone well and you have lost a few wickets.

The way this wicket has played and the lack of movement through the air and with all ten wickets in hand draw should be second not first option.

I do think the way test cricket is set up as opposed to club cricket or county cricket means sometimes there is less chance of teams really going for a win for two reasons.

The points system in the others provides great emphasis on winning a game rather than just drawing hence greater reward, where as in test cricket sometimes a draw can be seen as just as good as a win and there is too much pressure not to to lose ,meaning less risks are actually taken to win a game which I personally don’t like.

To me cricket is about winning a game and winning is what you should always look for first and foremost and a draw in a final innings should only be looked at when things do go well at first.

However of course it is a unlikely chase but like you say doesn’t mean you have to go mad, just sensible batting with positive mindset.

We should put any thought of winning this match out of our heads and bat steadily and sensibly until tea. If we are within 100 runs with wickets in hand then we have a go.

Unfortunately this is not what will happen
Think it will like. I honestly don't see a Silverwood team going for it. We may still lose, but we won't lose by having a dart imo.

Fancy the draw myself, if I were betting.

No!

No order bumping. It is very, very likely Chris Woakes and people roughly around 7-9 are going to be batting at the end of the day, when pressure is on. Leave him there!

What a shite day to have my first day back working in 2 weeks  Happily working at home but some fucker has put an 11-12 meeting in!
Without stating the complete obvious I think any chance we have hinges on Jadeja. If he doesn’t find a consistent line and length like his first 5 or 6 yesterday we have a great chance. If he bowls 30 overs plus fairly well we will struggle to take him for more than a couple an over. Going to be hard work for burns and Malan to score off him.

With power of hindsight I'd have picked Leach. He can generally hold down an end on a flat wicket whereas Ali can't. The main argument for picking Ali is his batting but we have no shortage of batsmen who can slog 20-30 runs. Leach actually has a decent defensive game and stick-ability as seen in the Ireland match and the third Ashes test in 2019.
Ali has bowled pretty well defensively up to this test - and even then only really yesterday. He's definitely had more control and the ability to hold an end down more this summer than we've sometimes seen in the past. Yesterday, he got hit when they went on the attack with 350 up and that can happen. But he still got the two most dangerous batsman out and, if we're trying to factor in an assessment of the pitches, has definitely has outbowled Jadeja so far this series, including in this match. People love to pelt him, but he's done his job fairly well imo and remains our best option. Been a tough series for spinners - even here, at the Oval, there's not much there on day 4. Old Trafford usually turns, so he could still play a key role.

Mind, deserves a few pelters for that run-out he fucked up, heads down cricket there.

Why they haven't picked Ashwin is beyond me - they must be absolutely kicking themselves today. It's not like he can't hold a bat either - he's a pretty good batsman!

Basically 100 runs a session, can't see Burns and Hameed managing that this morning but you can claw that back towards the end of the day with wickets in hand. It's beautifully poised, long way to go but would love to see Hameed make his maiden century !

Malan and root can score quick for me happy with the two openers to come out and just keep their wickets but keep the score competitive

Big day for Hameed feel like one of him or Burns needs to get a century to give us a chance
Both would be nice but seeing root coming in for 200+ runs would fill me with confidence

i fear that when one the openers go the other will follow which is usually the case
