Mortimer & Whitehouse Gone Fishing

TBF that’s not just him like, the RSPB are flatly refusing to acknowledge the damage that growing numbers of magpies and several species of gull are doing to songbirds, wading birds and smaller species of sea birds. I’ve cancelled my membership with them, tutted loudly and sent an angry letter!

as for the hedgehogs, I think they’re facing significantly more dangers posed by humans than badgers. But I’m sure they like to nibble on them too.

Unfortunately the “do-gooder” society will not acknowledge the helping hand benefits often made.
Should come to my garden and see a thriving bird population.
Shot over 150 rats with tails in 5 years, countless Magpies and Crows.

Cleared out 15 next boxes yesterday.
3 Great Tit successes and 2 Blue Tit successes.
Unbelievable that a Stock Dove had 2 young chicks in one of the Owl boxes. Not disturbed it thus confident all will be ok and they should be out by the end of September (will check again).

Swallows will be on their way in the coming days. Watching them assemble yesterday for their long journey back to warmer weather.

Good work fella.

TBH the songbird population also seems to have done well up here, thanks to last years early summer and hardly any traffic about. Goldfinches are everywhere this year as well as both Blue and Great Tits. Greenfinches seem to be vanishing unfortunately. This years late summer may have caused some problems though...

House Martins, Swifts and Terns have already departed from up here. Swallows, as you say. seem to be gathering, ready to go.

Gannets seem to be doing well, been watching them fishing in the River Wear again this morning.

Superb Mate.
Plenty of Greenfinches here. Biggest challenge they often face is feeders not being cleaned out.
Incredible that this time of year the Blackbirds leave the garden as plenty of berries to feed on. Come Winter they will come back.

I have put the nest boxes all down the trees as you drive into the village.
My Mrs (no) gave the game away by responding on the village Facebook account that it was me who put them there :)

It’s a lovely gentle programme sensitively made. Many people do not like fishing. The un hooking of fish can be traumatic depending on how they are hooked and the type of hooks used. This programme deals with it well so not to alienate people who do not like this aspect.

As a long time fisherman I hate seeing people ( more often abroad) gaffing large game fish in the side. It just looks awful.

I remember catching my first double figure Barbel and almost holding it aloft like the FA Cup.
I held it in the water until it went off like a Torpedo.
It was a late Summer fish, September. Late afternoon. 10lb 7ozs.

Beaming smile and unbelievable that I caught another double just under 11lb about an hour later. Magical moment.
Halibut Pellets.
It’s not just the fishing though is it. The tranquility and the fact that you are “blending” within the Countryside or Coast. You see and hear so much that makes it special. I often take the rod out of the water and go for a little stroll. The birdlife particularly is incredible. I have had Kingfishers land on the rod tip, fed Robins only feet away and an otter nearly taking the rod tip off the rod rest.
Best tonic away from the pressures of life. In my later years I will go fishing a lot more in my spare time.

I remember my first sea bass caught off the rocks. I had tried a pendulum cast and it had gone wrong and I had a massive birds nest on my Abu multiplier. As I was trying to sort it out I realised I had a fish on. Finally got the line running ok I started bringing the fish in assuming it was a cod but it felt heavier and fought more so I assumed it was quite a big fish - when I got it up the cliff and saw it I was initially disappointed as it wasn’t that big until I realised it was a bass. Cue much jumping around and shouting.

I parked up, went straight home, and had it for my tea with peas and chips.

Come to the conclusion that Fishery Robins are not shy in the slightest. Both at Birstall and Brighouse where I fish are robins that think nowt of wandering up your landing net handle, sitting on your side tray and helping themselves to your maggots. Almost got one of them to feed out of my fingers, reckon another week or so and he`ll be on.

As for the fishing its a bit of both, either on your own for peace and quiet or days like yesterday where theres a bit of a laugh and a bit of patter between the matchlads

Can we keep the thread to the subject please? If you want to bore fish story each other sod off elsewhere.

But that’s the essence of the programme and fishing. Fishing tales are an integral part of fishing.

now let me tell you about that ling I caught off a boat near craster. 11lb they reckon but when it got taken by"………………………………

I better not.

No, it’s not. That’s the beauty of it.

Missing the point I’m afraid.
Plenty of cracks fishing with my mate. Night fishing particularly, looking over my shoulder for objects thrown or the odd splash. Many special times just sitting talking about everything day or night.
I get the series I really do but the fishing is simply the glue.

Very spiritual is fishing, a magical swim that you fished as a young boy.
The Willow tree still in the same place, same branches but a little tougher to climb. What has past that river and what has past your life.
The beauty of that TV programme.

The beauty and joy is 2 friends just being friends. Daft, silly and achingly honest chats. The fishing is incidental. This thread is for the banter not how you outwitted a fish.

As explained bonded by fishing.
You only have to look at the laughter when Bob, the lesser angler floated by in Whitehouse’s swim. A big no no in fishing and both the irony and laughter.
Never lost on a fisherman.
Look at the banter when one of them hooks a fish, the Barbel episode I could really relate to. This programme ticks many boxes but you are choosing to remove the fishing out of the equation and you can’t.

Yet I find it funny and couldn’t give a shiney one about fishing.

....and you wouldn’t be alone.
I relate to it from the fishing and two old boys enjoying life.
Reminds me of my old Mate when I used to go fishing with him, both of us love football, wildlife particularly birds and fishing. Of course we put the World to rights and it used to be an incredible shot in the arm spending a day in his company. Still see him a few times a year but his passion for angling somewhat lost now due to a decline caused by so many factors.

Bob Mortimer always carrys "Pocket meat" - always makes me smile.

He once gave Damon Hill a scotch egg!

I went fly fishig with a very good friend but we are both very competitive. This particular day nothing was going right for me and as I got more frustrated things got even more sketchy. My casting went, fly choice made no sense and then just to cap it all my mate hooked into a fish and it was a beauty. He landed it and then began to regale me with all the details of how the fly landed, how the fish had two swirls at it etc etc

I had to take myself away and sit on a little grassy hill and have a Gingsters Slice with a cup of coffee.

I would rather have pushed him in the water and snapped his rod but I suppose we were good friends!!!
