Buttler

Good article regarding Jos and his Test future. He’s looked so out of sorts with the bat this series I’m glad he’s stepped away, but I’d hate to think it’s the last we see of him.

Fascinating to note that Root has scored a century in each of Buttler’s 6 games this year, and not even a 50 in the 5 games he’s missed, shows the value and importance of him being in the side for our captain and best batsman.

Yet only 2 hundreds in 53 Tests (@chunkylover53) for Buttler isn’t really a good enough return for a player of his quality and ability, even taking into account his position in the order and fact he is keeper batsman rather than specialist bat.

I’m generally in favour of him being in the side and was one of the few on here that championed him when the knives were out a couple of years back, I’d be sad to think we won’t see him again as a Test player, particularly, as the article states, his keeping has improved, albeit the criticism of it was over done.

Yet as the article also states his importance to the one day sides is huge and arguably not worth jeopardising for Test cricket. I think for me I’m coming round to the point of view that, as much as I love Test cricket and think it’s the ultimate form of the game, and as much as I’d love to see Buttler succeed at it, I’d rather see the Buttler of the last few years in the ODI side, especially if he does succeed Morgan as captain.

Ironically a lot of the same arguments could be made for Bairstow. Interesting times ahead for our keeper batsmen, I guess, particularly if Bairstow performs well.

Not sure I have the energy for a Buttler discussion again

As much as I am Buttler fan (a massive one).

And I am definitely in favor of him been in the side.

I think to mention that fact Root has them 100s when Buttler in the side and the low ones when he is not is pure coincidence nothing else and another example of stats taken too far.

All the credit for Root big scores is solely down to Root himself and the world class player and bloke his is and nothing else imo

Wel yes obviously you’re correct that the credit is fully to Root for his run of form & scores, and is more likely than not a coincidence, however it is a big coincidence and still fascinating nevertheless.

It is also indicative of the influence Buttler has on the dressing room and his teammates, something many of them have spoken about in glowing terms, and not something that should be underestimated, imo.

Well yeah I am in full agreement that Buttler comes across as top bloke and I imagine will be a great influence on the dressing room, just think a tad too far to give him even a very small influence on Root scores as that wholly down to Root imo.

I have really hoped Buttler will succeed at test level and continue to do so, as he is one of the most talented cricketers England have produced in recent years, but unfortunately has not totally transferred that undoubted talent on to the test stage.

Personally I would still have him in the test side but understand the arguments for him not to be.

Fair play mate.
