Good article regarding Jos and his Test future. He’s looked so out of sorts with the bat this series I’m glad he’s stepped away, but I’d hate to think it’s the last we see of him.
Fascinating to note that Root has scored a century in each of Buttler’s 6 games this year, and not even a 50 in the 5 games he’s missed, shows the value and importance of him being in the side for our captain and best batsman.
Yet only 2 hundreds in 53 Tests (@chunkylover53) for Buttler isn’t really a good enough return for a player of his quality and ability, even taking into account his position in the order and fact he is keeper batsman rather than specialist bat.
I’m generally in favour of him being in the side and was one of the few on here that championed him when the knives were out a couple of years back, I’d be sad to think we won’t see him again as a Test player, particularly, as the article states, his keeping has improved, albeit the criticism of it was over done.
Yet as the article also states his importance to the one day sides is huge and arguably not worth jeopardising for Test cricket. I think for me I’m coming round to the point of view that, as much as I love Test cricket and think it’s the ultimate form of the game, and as much as I’d love to see Buttler succeed at it, I’d rather see the Buttler of the last few years in the ODI side, especially if he does succeed Morgan as captain.
Ironically a lot of the same arguments could be made for Bairstow. Interesting times ahead for our keeper batsmen, I guess, particularly if Bairstow performs well.
