Hall and Shepherd were spending beyond our means chasing the moon, but that doesn't mean a) they would continue, b) Ashley was the only possible new owner around or, c) neglecting the club is better.

We can go in circles for decades if you want, but Ashley has clearly no ambition for Newcastle beyond surviving in the Premier League on as modest a budget as possible (see this transfer window for proof). He's turned us into the turd that won't flush (except for the 2 times it did). You might think that's aspirational for us, but when clubs like Leicester, Brighton, Leeds, Wolves, West Ham, have all shown more ambition than Newcastle, it proves that it's not reckless to want more than mere survival.

You, as a Sunderland fan, might think Newcastle United are destined to be bottom half due to petty rivalry. But the same logic that says no club deserves to stay up, says no club is bound to be bottom half, either.

So Brighton sign a 15m defender, Arsenal a 20m defender. Why on earth would they spend that kind of money just to placate the fans. It's nuts. The club is only worth 300m - you would need to spend 10%+ of that just to sign someone who would make any different to position or performance. They should have enough (injuries permitting) to finish above 3 from Brentford, Norwich, Palace, Brighton, Watford, Burnely and Wolves. They will get sold sooner or later, all he has to do is keep them up. It may be shite and poor to watch but hey ho better than being in L1 again.

You comparing him to Matty Longstaff? The hype surrounding the Longstaff brothers was/is ridiculous. Respect to any young lads who work hard to become pro’s but too often people get carried away after a couple of decent performances.

Has Brucie Bonus started saying you all don’t like him because he was born in Corbridge yet?

Conversely a potential bidder will not be as interested in a Premier League club which requires overhauls of the squad, the academy, the training ground, the stadium, etc. Especially when the price is as high as it is.

Just like if you were buying a house, you'd be more keen to buy one that didn't need a fuck ton of work. Unless you were getting it on the cheap.

At last, we agree on something.

re: your first point, I think it's a gamble to fail to invest in the squad. A couple of lads on loan should be enough to turn 17/18th into 13/14th. But it sounds like we aren't even using the loan market.

Fair but surely it would still be a more attractive prospect than a club that has just plummeted to league one on the verge of total collapse, like Leeds

Not really. Because while Leeds tumbled down the leagues, they have been on the up, and because their owners are ambitious, they're attractive. They've a top manager, who's reconstructed their squad and they've recruited well. Their facilities have been kept in better state than ours.
