A pointless contextomy argument. Man for man the Australia 2005 side was the best test team in the world at that time and had been for many years. If we'd gone on to win in India last winter or beat that NZ side at home, I'd rank them as equivalent achievements.

I disagree with that wholly re Root being best captain ever (if that’s what he said) I think he would have been a fine captain with the set of players Vaughan had though. Vaughan was a very good captain for his time as was Hussain before him who took over a much more problematic England team.

In my view Hussain couldn’t have done what Vaughan did and Vaughan couldn’t have done what Nasser did. When Nasser came in arses needed kicking and standards needed to be set. The players under Vaughan needed the more phlegmatic leadership he could offer them.

Wouldn’t disagree with that analysis mate. The right men for the job at the right time. I like Vaughan as well (heresy on here I know) and usually agree with most things he says when talking about cricket.

Still remember when Nass was going nuts in 2001 in Pakistan after winning that test in the dark 8-)

There is a book out that was referenced a few months ago and it looks at stuff like this

the analysis suggested he was actually right to bowl

Great win that was.

Another of his finest moments was his 1st innings century & victory in the 2nd Test in 2001 at Kandy. We won that tour 2-1, no mean feat when you look at the side Sri Lanka had then, a team full of greats including Jayawardene, Sanga, Murali, Vaas and a certain Kumar Dharmasena!

Interesting, its rarely a cut and dried decision, look at the last two Test matches for instance. I think he admits now he got it wrong but in fairness so much else can happen that can affect the outcome that to blame a captain for the outcome of a toss of a coin and a 50/50 decision before the games even started always strikes me as slightly harsh.
