Notts Vs Hampshire - T20 1/4 final Sky

What’s your rationale for that though? Is it simply because they don’t (or haven’t lately) produce(d) a great number of England players? Or because of on pitch performances in the last decade?

Without those counties there’d have been no Graeme Swann, no Stuart Broad, no Dominic Cork.

Much of their struggles now can be easily linked to the fact they don’t play out of Test venues. We’ve had the privilege of both worlds in the very recent past. Of hosting Test/international cricket, but since Graves’ attempt to exterminate us also of being out of the loop and there’s nothing to suggest that in the next 10 or 20 years of not being a Test venue we won’t end up in a similar predicament 🤷‍♂️

It doesn’t happen though 🤷‍♂️

There are some fairly sizeable minor counties that barely ever produce Test cricketers and to me there’s no coincidence that those counties are overlooked/forgotten/left out because they only play minor counties crickrt

I’m fairly confident in saying that would massively impair the development of our cricketers.

You only get better by competing against the best. Imagine Durham without ever having had Dean Jones, David Boon, Dale Benkenstein, Mike Hussey, Michael Di Venuto, Otis Gibson and many many more tremendous cricketers who played for us.

My biggest problem is there is not enough players of a decent quality to service 18 teams without spending huge amounts of their budgets on players that where not developed through the English system.
The players you have named such as Broad etc would all be playing cricket within a region covered by a regional team just it would be more competitive to make the grade.
I agree with you that "certain" overseas have been a great help but now most now are locum overseas who are here for a month or two. I also think that senior pros such as Rushy for instance at Durham can teach young bowlers at Durham just ad much as an overseas pro.
As I say not everbodies cup if tea but certainly the way Durham have gone especially with their youth development.

They wouldn’t mate. You’ve got no evidence whatsoever to back up your point, but just look at the number of players produced by Durham for England since 1992. Then look at the number of players that played for England from Durham & Northumberland prior to 1992. The fact is, prior to Durham becoming a first class county, it was near impossible to come from our region and progress to the heights of international cricketer.

How many cricketers from Devon have played for England? How many cricketers from Norfolk have played for England? If you aren’t represented you generally don’t get spotted. Hundreds of years of evidence backs that up.

It’s not so much about ‘teaching’, it’s about more than that. It’s about testing yourself against better players. For the likes of Matty Potts and Brydon Carse for example, it’s one thing to listen to a legend like Rushy, it’s another to get a spell at an international cricketer and get him out. Same for batsmen - we’ve had some top Test cricketers bowling in the Championship in recent years.

As for the ‘locum’ argument - that’s modern cricket for you. The counties aren’t to blame for that. The international schedule is. Just look at Finn Allen - missing the finals day of the 16.4 because New Zealand took priority. We’ll likely lose Bancroft to Western Australia before September ends. It’s the way it is, but while they’re available and while they’re here there is absolutely no way they can be seen as a negative effect on our domestic game.

sky pundits gutted notts are out....... suddenly going from "hampshire batted poor" to "it was a hard pitch to bat on"
Definitely! Instead of just saying Notts made a mess of it.

Mate that's your theory and I have another we shall see what happens in the future.
From what I heard at Jesmond yesterday Bancroft maybe having a "middy" now.

You made my point for me by mentioning Durham before and after 1992. With regional cricket geographically everywhere would be covered and youngsters would have a fair chance. You just didn't realize!

I didn’t. Hundreds of years of history tells you that counties don’t look too far afield for talent (for various reasons).

If we were ‘North East CC’ we’d never have signed Ben Stokes.

How many regions do you propose and where would they be?
