Yea that part I knew, it was during the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan in the 80's and to some extent was successful (short term) as it did give the Soviets their own Vietnam situation. There was obviously a significant bit of blowback afterwards though...

The way things work in the middle east, with so many proxy wars between Iran and Saudi Arabia (and their allies) it does become difficult to really pinpoint which group is being funded by who. The Qataris have been in bed with the Muslim Brotherhood for a long time, though I am not sure to what extent they've helped the Taliban as alleged by the OP. The main culprit, to my knowledge, has alwaya been Pakistan.

It's a complicated part of the world, and I'm sure that it touches on Qatar as well, but I always thought the Taliban was largely funded by wealthy Saudis and protected by Pakistan. Neither of whom are hosting the World Cup.

Pretty much mirrors my opinion. Their regime, like many in the area, is pretty hardline. An absolute monarchy who should have been having elections since 2003 but hasn't since 2013. They've got oil though and hit the right notes with the US when needed.

Technically it wasn't the Taliban, the CIA funded and trained the Mujahideen. It was in order to force the Soviets to spend millions trying to save face and ultimately was a major factor in the downfall of the Soviet Union. And then they just packed up and left the country with a massive power vacuum. Which isn't great when you have multiple tribes all wanting power. The Americans should've stayed and helped to bring about a proper government but they didn't really give a shit about Afghanistan or its people.
