When we get promoted...

I think if we drew, having had that shot smash the post/bar, we could maybe claim we were unlucky.

We weren't lucky to win, but it's not mad to say luck played its part.
Sorry, again, you must pick a viewpont......either we were lucky or weren't. It's pretty simple man.

Nothing is ever simple.

There were variables completely outside our control that went our way. Bobby Madley could have had a shite game, missed the penalty.... that's only one thing and that's 1-1.

What you actually want to discuss is whether luck is even a coherent concept, which is much more interesting.

Not really. I acknowledged it (luck) happens sometimes, but not most of the time. And the main argument is that it (luck) did not play a part this time. This was a classic case of the best team won, and I'm willing to continue to argue that point.

I fully agree that the best team won so I doubt there's much to argue.

But also luck always plays a part, if we accept it as a concept at all. So we're both right, but I'm more right. Which is the natural order of things. Night x

Sounds like you're more interested in your ego than actually just debating and accepting differing views. Goodnight mate

I thought we were so lucky to win yesterday, we were the best team by a mile for sure but Christ we rode our luck. Was buzzing to hear the final whistle, we played great and really deserved the 3pts.

Please remember guys that it is a 2-1 win over a side who struggled last season (one point from relegation) who bizarrely took THREE of our players from last season knowing full well how bad we have been in this league, and at times how easy we have been to beat, with effectively less than half a required squad to be considered strong and competitive.

It was only the first one of 46. We are going to have to perform like it for the next 45. If we do it ought to be good enough to go up.

Depends on how the others like Portsmouth, Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich Town, Lincoln City, Rotherham (who are leading the table), Charlton Athletic and a few others do. I think they will all be in the running to go up. If they do a Hull or a Peterborough, then as we saw last season no amount of wins will propel us up the table because they will be able to keep ahead of us matching anything we do. We need to be the ones in pole position like Hull and Peterborough were last season. To do that we are going to need to perform as we did yesterday against everyone home and away.

You've said some daft things in your time, but...

And can you tell me how many shots Burge had to save?

The double shot for their goal and Burge's parry in the second half? How many other saves did he have to make? Zero I think.
How can you say luck wasn’t a part of it? Didn’t they hit the post first half? That goes in, or the ref doesn’t give the penalty, and it’s a different game. Sure we were the better team but they also had their share of the chances. Think 2-1 was fair but Wigan weren’t totally inept as you are implying and they did create a fair bit themselves

How about serendipity?

I thought he had a good game.

True. Look at last season. We went on good runs of winning but never quite seemed to break into the automatic promotion places. We were never able to close the gap and overtake them. Hull and Peterborough just weren’t dropping as many points as we were picking up. They just kept on winning all the time. We are going to need to do the same.

But to say that "no amount of points..."

... well that was just silly.

It was one game against a side that’ll probably finish mid table.

I get the euphoria of being back in the ground and starting with a win but haway!

We’re still five or six players short of having a squad capable of competing for automatic promotion which should be the minimum aim for SAFC.
