Lack of transfers concerning?

Watching pre-season and this League the last few seasons…

We need full backs, desperately. Say if Hume signs back on and we get the lad from Liverpool and Key from Exeter, our squad will look a hell of a lot stronger.

Evans, O’Nien and Embleton with Neil and Winchester to come in is a good midfield at this level.

McGeady is still probably the best player in this league. Pritchard could be somewhere near, Diamond is a canny option. Stewart’s movement could potentially release them.

We also need another forward option with pace unless Kimpioka can step up and probably a centre half.

We’re not in as bad a shape as many have suggested. We still need players, maybe it’s good we’re taking time over it…

I’d have liked some more in by now though

We are a full back on either side away from having a team I'd be content with starting the league with. Not happy, just content. The bare minimum.

Although even then I haven't minded Winchester at right back as a worst case scenario.

I 100% understand the argument of having all your players in by start of pre-season, let alone game 1, but I still maintain I'd rather we waited until 30th August for our first choice targets than caved now and went for our 4th or 5th.

We need a keeper as well , simple as that

The higher the standard and fit of the right players is set the longer it will take. How many of the right players are available and will actually choose to come here in any given season? Two at most? The only time I've seen it done at Sunderland was under Alan Brown, took us years. It wasn't easy, this is where it began....

"Although I’d heard that one or two big clubs including Chelsea were showing an interest in me, none had come forward with a firm bid. Then one Monday morning I reported to The Den for training and was told that Sunderland manager Alan Brown was waiting to see me. Well, I didn’t even know where Sunderland was so my initial reaction was, ‘No way!’, but Alan simply wouldn’t take no for an answer and finally, he asked if he could come around later that day to meet my parents. He was such a nice man that I agreed but before he arrived I warned my folks, ‘there’s no way I’m moving up there so don’t let him persuade you otherwise’.

“We had a little terraced house and this was big stuff for my family. Here was a young lad in the family who was going to be transferred for 18 to 20 thousand quid and the house we were living in was worth only £750, so it was a horrendous amount of money” I primed my mother and father, ‘You’ve got to let Alan Brown know that I don’t want to go’. I was earning £15 a week, and my mother was getting eight or nine pounds of that for my board and lodgings. I thought I was a millionaire to have a few quid to spend on myself and I was earning more than my dad, I really didn’t want to go but Alan Brown was a charmer. He hardly spoke to me, but concentrated on persuading my folks - ‘lovely family, lovely house, my what lovely kids and all that sort of stuff.’ In all fairness they weren’t that lovely, we’d had a tough old life and my dad was a tough old cookie. Alan was using his charm and he eventually melted my mother and my Dad just wanted me to become a famous footballer, so there were no problems with him. In the end I said ‘OK, I’ll sign’, at which point Alan literally jumped in the air with joy!"

Not only did he build a cracking side around Charlie (Cloughie would represent the final piece in the jigsaw) he also helped lay the foundations for our cup win by revamping our youth system. Not going to happen today is it. :)

Nathaniel Atkinson would be a handy addition but not sure of brexit rules these days right back with pace also think bigger clubs may snap him up.

I agree with this. We need a starting 11 ready for Wigan but a squad ready for the end of August. Absolute bare minimum 2 new signings (full backs) before the start of the season and surely another 3 or 4 in August…

It's ridiculous we've gotten this far and are thinking of playing the likes of those mentioned back there. We need two players on both sides and haven't gotten one in.
I agree. Not great and hoping things change this week. Cant expext to play midfielders there from the off. Aye help if injury to FBs but to start with none is mental.

Really feel a couple will come in this week though

I'm getting myself prepared for a slow start to the season with dropping points due to round pegs in square holes (Winchester at full back) and a lack of goals.

We are still away short of a promotion squad IMHO we still need a minimum of three full backs 1 centre half (2 if Wright) leaves and a goal scoring forward (I know Wyke will probably never have another season where he scores as many as last season but that's a lot of goals we have lost)

Goalkeepers (tin hat on) both Burge and Patterson are capable at this level not the best but not the worst and I would prefer to see Patterson be able to develop behind a keeper like Burge who he (should) end up better than as oppose to getting someone else in and knocking Patterson further down the pecking order.

Centre midfield we should be OK with what we have both defensively and attack minded

Wide midfielders/wingers maybe 1 more as 1st choice with McGeady but we should have enough with Gooch/Kimpioka/Embleton

Its quite laid back, almost horizontal. Injuries, suspensions etc will leave us well short for goals and experience.

Its gonna be a long hard season.

I think the original OP should be changed to alarming now . If they are playing a game of poker , then they are pretty good at it .

Getting ridiculous now, 12 days to go to Wigan ffs.
All well and good doing due diligence on a player and not being held to ransom, but it's looking unlikely that there'll be a canny few additions in time for Wigan the way we are going about things.
Are we offering contracts that aren't long enough, offering piss poor wages - just why are targets not coming (other than clubs refusing to sell or loan).
Never had faith in the so called new model, and have even less now.
Could see Gooch ending up back there and maybe even O'nien again
It's pathetic man
