T20 :: Northants v Durham

brandon

Striker
Wednesday night, 18:30.

A rarity that I start these white ball threads, but I’m bored and I have questions to ask…

Will Stokes stay in our side? Given he’s not in the ODI squad he might aswell, surely?!

Will Northants field a weakened side? They’re at Leicester tonight and if they lose they’re out. Could we see them blooding a few youngsters if they’ve got nothing to play for??

Big game for us this, up to now we’ve done so well considering the strength of some of the teams in our group. I don’t think we’re ‘that’ good, but we’ve bowled and fielded very well collectively IMO with only a couple of exceptions and with the bat we’ve seen some unlikely but very welcome heroes.

We’ve got to win this one though, with a couple of tough assignments to come to finish the group it’s imperative we get two points here.

After this we’ve got Leicestershire and Derbyshire at home before travelling to Lancashire and Nottinghamshire.

Three ‘winnable’ games which would guarantee qualification if we oblige - before two games where you wouldn’t back us should we need to win to go through.

Wonder if the University of Northampton students have been invited to this game?🤔

It's the 'winnable' games we seem to struggle with ie crushed by Northants and Worcs and did our best to try and lose at Leics.:D

Frank Watson who is normally the Worcestershire BBC commentator is doing the Durham commentary tomorrow.
I hope he has brushed up on the village, Rocker Rivera, oh and the tour de France has started.

There was a Scott Steel playing for Leica tonight. 300 runs at av. 33 and bowling with an ER of 6.21 this season. Looks like a shrewd signing?

Leicestershire have crashed out of the competition a fortnight before the end - if that’s where their priorities lie they’ll need a few more like him.

Indeed- the inference was that Durham retaining Steel would have been a bit more shrewd than giving Coughlin a 3 year contract.

A player who is in their plans for all forms of cricket versus a player who only features in white ball…? I’m not sure I can agree.

A player who is good in two formats versus a player who is poor in three. A player signed on encouraging performances years ago versus a player who was useful on present ability. Yet another seamer versus a handy spin bowler.

We’ll visit it again in a few years time. Half a season is hardly time enough to judge a signing/non-signing.

"In a few years"? Coughlin is 28. How many more seasons do you think we should give him?

Averaged 19 with bat and 100 with ball in the Bob Willis Trophy. Already two seasons on the spin he hasn't made the grade.

His age is irrelevant to the point, it’s more a case of what he produces during his contract - considering someone’s argument about a three year contract.

If he's on a three year contract, he's been a waste of a signing already. Unless you think we should sign players in the hope they come good once in three years. If he wasn't a homegrown Durham lad I'm convinced you wouldn't be so defensive about him.

Yes,the fact is he still got 18 months remaining on his contrac t and all should hope he can produce in that remaining time. Apparently when he lost his CC place he wanted to play for home club Eppleton to regain form but Franklin blocked the request.

Occasional games or full time? If he's getting paid by DCCC he should be regaining form in the second xi not the north eastern premier League.

Only play club cricket if not required for County and club play compensation to county afaia. Problem with Coggers was he wasn't performing for 2nds. Obviously needed a spell in club cricket in attempt to regain form.
Trevaskis out tonight( covid contact isolation).
Stokes still available, Campbell and Poytner added to squad.
