He later admitted it was a joke iirc adding that the Sunderland crowd were electric and the Roker coastline was particularly beautiful. He revisited Sunderland several more times after that gig apparently, must have fell in love with the place. Most people do when they experience the place and people themselves instead of naively absorbing the anti-Sunderland/North East rhetoric in the media.

Me brother went to that gig.Wasn't aware Bowie came back and fell for the place, that's class.Love Bowie me, earlier stuff though, wasn't keen on the 80's stuff.

Got any sources for this? I very much doubt Bowie came back to Sunderland several times and fell in love with the place!
 
It's bizzare how Bowie is so sycophantically held in such high asteem by so many. Fair enough he had some great songs in 70s and early 80s but Ive seen him live twice at Sunderland & Newcastle Arena and he was horrific. Big Country blew him away. The most self indulgent set lists I have ever seen. Tony Hadley puts on a much better show.

His output from 1984 onwards and pre 70s was pretty shit too apart from a slight return to form on his last album.

Probably revisted Newcastle several more times and thought he was in Sunderland

in 1972 and ‘74. Put on a hell of a show both times. Also saw Queen, Supertramp and a few others that escape me. Great venue, like having a personal performance from the artists.
