Durham v Essex

Didn't play well but we were beaten by a better team. The wicket and umpiring didn't help but made little difference in the end. After being tortured by Harmer in the Chelmsford game it was nice to see him get some tap at the Riverside. We've improved a lot from last season but theres more work to be done before we can seriously start pushing for trophies.

I think some are being a little harsh on Durham. Essex have been the dominant County Championship force for a few years and, for a lot sides, it's going to be how they measure up to the benchmark rather than the expectancy of winning.

It's a learning curve, and if Warwickshire either win or draw with Notts tomorrow, a top two place isn't out of reach.

The umpires obsession with lbw didn't help, but when you're up against a side who know how to win from the most hopeless of situations, being skittled out for 99 in the first innings was always going to make it a North face of the Eiger situation.

If lessons are learned about application and time management, it may be no bad thing in the long run.

People talking a lot about the batting, but we had them 54/5 in the second innings yet remarkably let them recover to 301 all out, with some loose bowling and lack of variety. If we'd tidied that innings up at under 100 we'd have won the game.

End of the day we are a bottom half division 2 side, who have just played the best team in the country, the difference was clear to see. One of those games, but we are progressing well this season. I'm not convinced yet by Borthwick but we shall see. Was good to see Jones bat well today and I hope he can take confidence from that. Delighted to be back, thrilled to see cricket friends and enjoyed the weather. Hopefully pop down on Friday for the T20 games.

There was a spell there in the Jones/Bedingham partnership where a win actually seemed possible, if they could bat together for maybe 2 sessions. Big ask like. But both hit numerous drives that didn't pierce the infield. My impression was that Essex were grinding away, without any success, but the bowlers were bowling very tight lines to a well set and organised field. Essex were being threatened but wouldn't back off, couldn't take wickets so just strangled runs instead. Biding their time, been there, done it all before.

He's contributed well for Durham
He's adequate, but needs replacing if we are to make the next step up. No surprise we won two games when he was dropped for Wood.

No doubt he will play at New Road on Thursday. I look forward to your analysis of his bowling.

Salisbury is more experienced than Potts but little to choose between their abilities. You can only gain experience though by playing, obviously. The weakness in our attack is lack of variation. Hence the need to give Trevaskis at least a chance.

Agreed.

I'd love to see Paul Coughlin get his finger out as on his day he's a bloody useful cricketer but just isn't delivering at the moment

To complete the statistics I have inserted the 2021 season averages and strike rates above. Stats over fewer matches are much less reliable of course and tell only part of the picture anyway, but being current are perhaps a better indicator than whole-career figures.

Wood, by the way, in 3 matches took 10 wickets at an average of 23.30 and strike rate of 47.40.

I think you quoted Raine and Salisbury's batting averages!

Here are this year's stats. As you can see, Salisbury is lagging slightly behind the other seamers, apart from Coughlin.
