Next trip was due end of this month and again in June but we've book to LHR with BA....All for the sake of 1 hour in London to tie up bits and pieces

A few years ago I looked at a LNER trip from Sunderland to KX, it was about £150. Booked it as two journeys, Sunderland to Newcastle was a std £5 fare. The Newcastle - KX bit cost me £35. All on the same train they were trying to charge me £150 for!

It's all about quotas - each possible journey has a set number of "cheap" fares. Once those cheap fares are sold, it reverts to the standard advance or walk on fares
So, for example, NCL to KGX might have a standard fare of £100 (for example) but a cheap fare of £50
Once the NCL-KGX are sold out, you can only buy the standard fare. That doesn't mean the quota of cheap fares from SUN-KKG are sold out, so in the barmy world of ATOC, you can buy the tickets you just mentioned and travel on the same train

It's the same when you run out of cheap fares from KGX to NCL, but there are still some left KGX to EDB. Passenger buys one, alights at NCL and is shocked to then be charged an Excess Fare.

Easy way to get round that is to book/pay for a separate ticket online in advance from Durham/C-L-S to Newcastle and pick it up from the machine at KX before you set off. ;)

Ah you sure? I've been going to Blaydon quite a bit throughout lockdown and everytime you get stopped at the level crossing there (which seems every time), they've nearly always been 4 carriage trains heading to Hexham and beyond. Maybe they've swapped what routes they're on.

train from smoggy to least poocastle has had 4 carriages on least since the start of lockdown

Thats rail transport in the UK under privatisation in a nutshell.

I have said for years that if London had to put up with a transport system like ours there would be riots in the streets and it would be the single most important issue at any and every election.

I have every confidence it will all be sorted soon mind as Hartlepool will be like Canary Wharf in a few years under Tory rule........ :rolleyes:

Matlock to Cromford
Now that’s two stops over about four miles.
Yes, you know it - cheaper to book Matlock to Matlock Bath then Matlock Bath to Cromford on same train!!
 
We booked seats (LNER) once the Lincoln date/time was confirmed. 2 returns Edin. to Sunderland £20 25p return each with a 2together railcard..10am train to Central then the 11;41 to Sunderland...Back up on the21;59 from Central so no rush after the match...

Madness some of 'em. Exeter St David's to Hilsea a few years ago was £70. Exeter St David's to Fareham was £15 and buying a separate ticket in advance from Fareham to Hilsea was £3 (but travelling on exactly the same train).

I remember one bloke (well dressed in his 50s) screaming in my face once, claiming the machine had "eaten his ticket" and how we had "stolen" his money

It was a £3.50 ticket to CLS :lol:


(Also, he had dropped his ticket and someone picked it up :lol:)
