Northern trains

I went up to Sunderland during Easter midweek and there was 4 carriages. Hardly anyone onboard

I got the train up to Sunderland for the Plymouth away game and there was only 2 carriages and it was packed!

I got a LNER train from KX to NCL last May. There was more carriages (12) than passengers (11).

Didnt on Saturday when I went to Newcastle on the piss.

Dogshit they are.

Because they’ve only be running about 60% of services due to covid, they’ve been able to use the units not being used increasing the carriages on the ones that are running (not all). Unfortunately as of Monday they can’t do that as they are going back up to about 90% of services. They should have kept the old pacers they got rid off to use on busy days. Yes they were old and embarrassing but atleast they could have carried more passengers. However it probably wasn’t financially beneficial for them so the people who matter (the public) have to suffer.

Northern isn’t Arriva anymore, they handed the keys back a while back, publicly ran now.

The replacement bus is needed as Network Rail are carrying out engineering work on the line, not much Nothern can do about it.

Correct. They will definitely be back down to 2 carriages from Monday.

Are you sure? National Rail website has it down as all weekend. It would be very unusual for Network Rail to take possession of a line during the day.
Just looking at the schedules, it has the first one from Boro to Sunderland with the bus to Hartlepool as the 1602 train.

The 17.58 from Ipswich to Peterborough will be this coming Saturday if it’s a two coach rattler

I was meant to get this train. Due to breakdowns Greater Anglia could only provide a single carriage service! To say that those that braved the service were packed like sardines is an understatement. What made the day worse was that the train from Peterborough was delayed too, so I didn't get back to Durham 'til gone 1am.

PS Yes, I did feel that this story needed telling nigh-on two year later.

PPS Jason Statham to play me in the film.

Wouldn't be surprised to see it back down to 2 carriages from Monday. There's not enough trains to run them all doubled up. They've only had the extra carriages during lockdown as the Morpeth services were 1 train every 2 hours (instead of hourly), Tyne Valley 1 trains every hour (instead of 3) and the Saltburn to Darlington was down to hourly (instead of 2). It's all going back to normal service from Sunday.
It is just in the last week it has gone to four carriages all through lockdown it has been 2 carriages ….

You sure?

Buses replace trains between Middlesbrough and Hartlepool on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 May. Your journey may be affected by engineering work

As per the northern website
Yeah checked on app for some reason it says 1130/1230 trains direct to sund but disrupted on way back?

They jacked up the price's though back then... I know that they cost of first class return nearly doubled from the Virgin of grand central trains. Cheaper to fly down to the smoke nowadays

£21 each way on LNER is what I've paid since March 2020, except my journey on 25th of this month which has cost £29. £5-£8 Pompey to Waterloo anarl.

Cross Country trains have gone off the scale like. Sou-Ncl £300+ return with Loganair. Used to be £70 with Flybe.

BA £89 return to London STN or GTW

Both a bit of a hike for me, especially the former. That's nearly half way home. By the time I've travelled, checked in, landed etc I could be yem!
I've been using GNER, Virgin, GC and now LNER for the last six years ( x2 first class) from Sunderland to KGX and apart from LNER the others have been fine. The Price hike for ordinary reserved seating I think according to my lad who travels with me was twice the price as most time we needed to be in London before 12 and the 8pm out back home. We checked out off peak travel with a hotel overnight which worked out cheaper than on the day travel only. Next trip was due end of this month and again in June but we've book to LHR with BA....All for the sake of 1 hour in London to tie up bits and pieces
