Another US school shooting

The idea of the right to bear arms came about with a view of protecting the farm and a bit hunting. Said arms being little more than musckets.

That retired accountant at the Vegas music festival had weaponry that any 21st century army would be proud of. 23 assault rifles including AR-15's and AK47's most of which were modified with bump stocks to enable rapid fire. The bump stocks are legal under federal law as they don't mechanically alter the firearm (its the human gripping action which enables the auto effect). He might have used a further device to simulate grip.

In 11 minutes of shooting this old boy killed 58 and injured over 500. All with legally obtained firearms. I'm not altogether sure this is the kind of thing they had in mind whilst penning the 2nd amendment.

Wasn't there a change in law regarding bump stock after this shooting? May be wrong, just rings a bell.

The purpose of the second amendment is to allow the people the chance to overthrow a despotic government if it ever came to that, nothing to do with hunting.

Tbf no matter who’s in charge this type of shit should always make the news round the world but when you look at how many make the news over here compared to how many shootings actually happen per yr its a small percentage that we hear about, not our country not our problem some might say dya know what i mean? Its happening half the world away from Columbia little by little it just fades away while all around the world its just as bad or worse, knife crime over here it’s not like we live in an oasis

Shootings and fatalities are so commonplace in places like Chicago it seems to be almost normalised.

Possibly mate, aye. The company that designs and makes them, upon release of the first model surpassed their annual sales target in a couple of days. I guess these devices are simple to make from a mould so will be really cheap and easy to get hold of, don't imagine those planning a spree killing or massacre will be unduly concerned with legal technicalities. This retired accountant did it all by the book though, like a really angry version of our own grumps.

Unfortunately theres always gonna be one loop that gets access to daddies or mammies guns and goes on a rampage...
So while im fully against arming teachers surely it makes sense to have 1 that has access to a gun to defend the poor kids that are like sitting ducks .
The shooter might just think twice.
Probably not I know but ...oh I dinnar
I thought the schools all had security guard types these days?

There's a reason why these shootings never happen at rich kid schools. It's because those schools are protected by armed security and are designed in a way to prevent this shit happening (minimal and controlled entry/exit points etc). Everybody jumps to "ban guns!" when something like this happens but there are more realistic ways to try and solve the problem. Mental health and young adults turned into zombies by anti-depressant drugs also need to be looked at.
To be fair, plenty of affluence in Columbine and Sandy Hook / Newtown, so the first part doesn't ring entirely true, but I agree with the mental health comment. There's two separate debates to guns in the US, it's not one simple debate, with "gun crime" being primarily an urban problem involving undocumented/illegal firearms and minorities, and mass shootings, which seem to be primarily legal weapons and have often white perpetrators. The latter seems to be where mental health monitoring would be particularly key in controlling who has access

The accountant guy fits into the second category but would probably never be picked up by screening etc, a real anomaly. But surely there's no need for people to have AR-15s etc for fucks sake.

The fact that the 2nd amendment exists, shows that they can change laws. It being someone's "constitutional right" is a massive cop out of an excuse. People want guns and they're willing to pay the price of children dieing to keep them. It's utterly f***ing mental.

The bit I never get is how people react to this sort of thing. Surely any normal human being sees a school getting shot up and thinks “you know what, maybe I don’t need a gun if that’s what happens”

it’s baffling

If I knew someone who was hit by a car I'd think it would be me off cars, not think 'well if everyone was in a car we'd all be safe'

I think the Biden administration is proposing civil liability to gun manufacturers for misuse ie whatever gun is used in a shooting/killing, the manufacturer holds part liability.

No idea how that will work out if at all.

For me, if weapons of that nature are available to the public, they should only be allowed for use at ranges and kept locker-stored there by owners. No reason for assault weapons in the home.

Could see it working if it was for weapons sold by manufacturers direct to consumers at gun shows, where there is no need for any kind of background check to complete a purchase
