Again, you're talking about winning the league, where I've been consistently talking about midtable.
You're playing the same 16 of 20 teams. 80% are the same teams. And, for a midtable club, you can use points gained as a marker for progression/regression as those points are reflective of your teams' results across the season.
I understand all of that. I also understand that League position isn't the best measure of a midtable-team's progress, as it is affected by results in games that the team cannot affect. Which is the common sense position I took about a week ago that a few of you would rather argue against because a Mag said it, than accept it on it's own merit.

“getting more points” might be because the other teams are shitter. That’s not something your team can affect.

For a mid table club you can also use league placings as a marker for progression/regression as those placings are reflective of your teams results across the season.
Easy this aint it.
Ask any Chairman, Manager, Players or fans if they'd rather finish higher in the league with fewer points or lower in the league with more points.
Unless your in the cult of Rafa I think we both know what the answer will be.

Apart from games won, goals scored, goals scored from open play, goals conceded, shots per game, shots on target per game, shots allowed per game, tackles made per game, interceptions made per game... All of those were worse in Bruce's first season.As placings gain prize money but points don't they're as important as xGs in this argument! Yet again a mag comes on here and try to twist an argument to fit their hatred of Ashley and Bruce. Just accept there is very little difference in Bruce's first year to benetiz seasons. I've only mentioned Benitez when others have brought it up. My point, from the off, was that League position is affected by other teams' performances in other games and, as such, isn't the best marker for your teams' progress/decline.
Team A gets 39pts every season for 4 years, they can finish 17th, 15th, and so on. According to some on here, finishing 15th on 39pts shows progress.
This whole conversation has been the usual suspects seeing the name of the person who posted it, and reacting to that, rather than the argument and it must be f***ing boring to everyone else.

The only way you can compare seasons is if you play the exact same teams in the exact same order with the exact same lineups, then compare results otherwise your comparing apples and pears.

Your final points total is affected by other teams as well.
You might play a team high/low on confidence (depending when you play them)
You might play a team with loads of injuries.
You might play a team which a resting players.

It has to come down to what performances are like, and the direction that the season has gone in.
For example in Bruce's first season here we finished 13th, but we were in the top 10 for the first half of the season, before falling away a bit and being lower mid table until May, Darren Bent got 24 goals.
In the PDC/Poyet season we finished 14th, got to a cup final, another cup QF but were in the bottom 3 for pretty much the entire season, barring a few weeks in midseason and the last 3-4 games.
I will say the Poyet season had much higher high points but it's no comparison really. But on paper you see 13th vs 14th not much difference.
