Cuts to domestic cricket coverage

The biggest threat to the county championship is the attitude of the counties to it and it's structure.
Folk not turning up to support it, is a major threat also.

People can't moan about ecb not taking it seriously/lack of funding for commentary etc when people don't turn up and watch it.

Plenty opportunities for people to attend, and they just don't. It's little wonder it's not taken as seriously nowadays

I remember in ancient times when itv used to show the Yorkshire v Lancashire championship game on an afternoon.
Ah yes the memories from the 70s.... Commentary by Keith Macklin with Yorkshire batting under slate grey skies on 121-5 from 70 overs with Boycott on 36no playing a series of forward defensives to Flat Jack Simmons while at the other end Peter Lee would twiddle his moustache and bowl a nagging length to Colin Johnson with encouragement from Faroukh Engineer behind the wicket.

I agree with you but it's just not going to happen. I know I have said it time and time again on here but at Durham I see largely the same people who have been attending championship cricket for the past 15 to 25 years and very few new regular faces to replace the older members who don't make a return each summer. The normal excuses are made that more cricket should be played at the weekend or championship cricket at the height of summer but it doesn't make the slightest difference to the attendance. The only time I notice a larger crowd is when we play Yorkshire but even that is nothing compared to what it was.
Anyway off my soapbox although I knock it I will still be there for the first championship match we can attend as members and possibly not the first T20 but then again Iam a cricket dinasour!

You're right sadly. People will still take an interest in the CC from afar but they simply dont turn up at the games.Like me I imagine you'll remember the last two days of the final CC home game against Notts in 2009 when the club threw open the gates to allow free admission to anyone to watch what will probably be the greatest ever Durham side that I will ever see crowned champions for a second successive season under clear blue skies and there were no more than 3500 in attendance and how many of the additional spectators ever came back?

Twas always the same - We all remember the sell out 6500 crowd for the first Sunday League game at the Racecourse in 1992 against Lancs but I was there at the same ground the following Saturday for the first home CC game against Leics and you'd be lucky if there was 1500 there.

Hopefully the streaming will help popularise the county game again. Ultimately a lot more people will watch that than go to a match. It's a long day for most people to go to a county match and it's not like many people can just pop over in 5 minutes and catch it when it's out of the way. Some of the more urban grounds have that convenience advantage.

Crowds are sparce at CC games and have been so since the 60s but there's still interest in it. At the forum Bostock stated that the CC streaming service had proven very popular- over 1 million hits in 2020 truncated season which is why ECB have increased funding to enhance the service. The CC is the breeding ground for test cricket which remains the major money raiser which is why it remains essential.
The casual cricket supporter will only attend in fine weather and for a shortened form so I'm afraid we traditionalists have to accept that. Still can't see why both white ball and red ball can't be played concurrently -T20 every Sunday May to August. I'll ignore the folly-post gets deleted if you mention h******d - it'll be dead in a few years anyway.

I’ve never understood why channel 4 (or other) haven’t picked up the championship. It’s not expensive tv, small upgrades on the stuff the counties stream, and would get decent audiences during the day.

And it builds interest
Advertising revenue for the shite they'd have to ditch during the day to show County Cricket would outweigh the advertising it would generate.

Gradually building an excellent* sports portfolio them. Ran by the same company as ‘Premier Sports’ iirc.

*If you love Ice Hockey and European football along with cricket, which I do.
Field and ice. Used to be on back in the 80s a lot
I’d say FTA coverage of the domestic game aside, Ice Hockey is in the best situation it’s been for a long time. GB currently in the Elite Group of the World Championships too, which saw them achieve their highest ever finish at the 2019 tournament
