When someone asked me a questions like this before I used to say "The Life of David Gale".
It's a clever film about how the death penalty and how someone was wrongly convicted but still went to trial.
Unfortunately it's Kevin Spacey but if you can overlook him, it's a decent watch.

Blimey, that takes me back to my student days in the early 1990s. One of my flatmate's had the video of this and I'd never seen a film like it. The main character had some bizarre ways of killing his victims in the film. Not seen this since then, I'll probably try and get a copy now.
The other movie he had was eraser head which was a total headache of a film.

my recommendation is Sweetheart,
Again, it’s better to go in blind, for the most part it’s one person on a desert island but this is a post JJ Abrams world we live in (this is better than his shite!).

Yeah, enjoyed that on Film4 a while back.
Personally I’d have gone with the alternate ending though.
May as well have made it absolutely grim as fuck by that point.
