Bruce, from the off, said he wanted us to play more attacking football, so what's stopping him? He's got a decent striker, a good attacking midfielder or two, yet we spend more time in our own box than anywhere else.Southampton are due to progressive managers getting a certain style. You've had 2 managers recently for whom defence is the be all and end all. Leeds have proven you don't need millions to play well. Bruce is called a dinosaur but he's only extending the intra defenceive ways of the great waiter

Bruce is called a dinosaur because his approach is out of date, not because he's defensive. Simeone isn't a dinosaur.
So many people are saying Bruce is playing the same way as Benitez did, but under Steve we're passive, porous and pretty shit. The football may have been attritional and boring at times with RB, but at least we were good at defending (we also scored more in each of RB's full seasons in the Prem, than we did with SB).
But away from the boring Bruce/Benitez comparison, Southampton show that with the right appointments you can take a club away from simply surviving in the Premier League and strive for better without spending beyond your means.

Your set up defensively just as you were unler the genius. Only difference is that Bruce is less stuck in detail and doesn;t have the team as drilled as Benitez. Your results are similar with a similar squad of players. He can't go and play like southampton if your squad (largely assembled by Benitez) isn't up to playing that way. Looking at it the attacking players are best suited to the counter and thats the way your playing. Benitez would have been lorded for the Liverpool result and performance. If change in style is demanded then as a fan base you should make this known but also accept it may come with relegation, on the up side to that you may be able to develop that style better and return in better shape, or you can keep defending your way to safety each year and stay on the gravy train. If thats what you want great, but if you want both that'd taks some time to renew the squad enough to accomplish.Bruce, from the off, said he wanted us to play more attacking football, so what's stopping him? We have done some really good work in the transfer market, but we've wasted a lot of money too. For every Perez or Sissoko, there are plenty of Thauvin's, Riviere's and Joelinton's.
You don't have to go full Shepherd to be ambitious. Look at Southampton as an example. The very definition of a selling club, yet they're playing good football and aiming to move up the table.
The only difference is that one had the team well drilled defensively and the other doesn't I'd agree. That's not an excuse, it's a cause for concern.Your set up defensively just as you were unler the genius. They're not, we fget spanked more under Bruce than we did under RB, CH, AP, it's only McClaren who's worse.Your results are similar with a similar squad of players.
Sorry, wasn't talking about playing like Southampton with this squad with this manager, that's not realistic. But the overall approach of the club should be more like Southampton. He can't go and play like southampton if your squad (largely assembled by Benitez) isn't up to playing that way.
Bruce was praised for the Liverpool result and rightly so. We played well against the best team in the land. But we don't put that kind of effort into games where we've got a decent chance of a win. Like Fulham, or Brighton etc.Looking at it the attacking players are best suited to the counter and thats the way your playing. Benitez would have been lorded for the Liverpool result and performance.
Happy enough to play 5 at the back on the counter, or 4-4-2 gung-ho, or 4-5-1 possession-style, as long as we're well drilled in that system. We are not well organised under Bruce, not consistently, anyway. Also, at the minute, the only way fans can voice their displeasure is on social media, where they're dismissed as Keyboard warriors. If change in style is demanded then as a fan base you should make this known but also accept it may come with relegation, on the up side to that you may be able to develop that style better and return in better shape, or you can keep defending your way to safety each year and stay on the gravy train. Brighton are another well run club. Some way behind Southampton and Leicester, but they've a good Techincal Director in Dan Ashworth. Appointing a head coach that fits the club's philosophy, rather than letting the head coach decide on that. More long term approach which just makes sense.Southampton seem a good run club. Always hanging about the top half of the middle third of the league. Doing well this season bit also benefiting from Chelsea and Arsenal underperforming.
Try to not get blinded to the fact the Brighton and Burnley are not really ‘little’ clubs anymore.
As a side note, I’m not sure why a decent conversation can’t be had without name calling.

Well it's not a cause for concern if your getting resultys which at present you are. Your in roughly the same position you've been in since promotion. The only difference is that one had the team well drilled defensively and the other doesn't I'd agree. The bit they believe is true...
"Furthermore, relegation will result in the Saudi PIF (or any other potential buyer) walking away."
They walked away last year you bunch of morons![]()
Better football, and a brighter future. We'll not get any points in 21/22 from the profits we've made, Southampton may well from the players they've signed.Interesting comparison as the clubs are of similar financial stature. However, for the year ending 30/6/2019 they mad a loss of 34m (after player trading). Newcastle made a profit of 34.7m. 68m difference for a points gap of 10m (could easily have been 7 if not for Liverpool's profligacy) although better football!
What stopped Benitez playing more attacking football? He concentrated on sorting the defence and only really turned his attention to the top of the pitch at the end of his tenure. Given attackers tend to cost more, it's no shock that he operated that way under Ashley. Typical that Bruce had c£80m spent on the attack. What stopped Rafa?
Will Southampton get into Europe? I doubt it. Last season 4th bottom earned 7.1m, 10th earned 16m in merit payments. Ashley knows you all hate him, he wants to sell. In that position no one, never mind Ashley, is going to spend money the amount it would take to earn 9m quid more. Who knows with a few lucky wins you may even get to the 10th. We can hope and pray you get relegated but I think you will stay up.Bruce is a perfect manager in a COVID world and empty stadium - just keep the wolf from the door until Ashley gets a buyer. He will only get peddled if relegation is on the cards.Better football, and a brighter future. That's a pathetic excuse man, come on you can do better than that.Better football, and a brighter future. We'll not get any points in 21/22 from the profits we've made, Southampton may well from the players they've signed.

Performances suggest our results will fall away.Well it's not a cause for concern if your getting resultys which at present you are. Your in roughly the same position you've been in since promotion.
Your defeats are sometimes by more goals but your points tally and goals scored are similar. So your kicking off over goal difference as well as net spend!
Approach only changes over time. Ashley signed 60 million worth of attackers last year and Wilson and Fraser this. Money is being spent. I'd say approach has changed.
Bruces team usually raise their game against the teams finishing higher in the league. Its a feature of sides that finish in the bottom half of the league though. If your players we consistantly playing at a high level they'd be a Man United or City and wouldn't go near your side.
So if you brought in a Roy Hodgson or Neil Warnock type who'd organise you and make you hard to beat you'd be happy. Come off it! We know you just want a big name, Football is no worse over a season and Bruce is "one of your own" but as he's not won at other clubs you can't bask in others glory your want him out.
I actually hope you get what you want, Ashley sells and a new buyer spends money on the never never like previous owners did. I hope Benitez spends this money as he's proven throught his career he's bad at spending money. You'll be back in the championship before you know it pennyless and with no future, you've no ground to sell and you'd be in an even worse position than us, but at least you'd be rid of nasty old Mike and his zero hour contracts.
Getting into Europe doesn't just earn you an extra £9m. You'll get money from European competition, you'll attract better corporate sponsors, better players and so on.Will Southampton get into Europe? I doubt it. The fall out from the takeover has made Newcastle toxic and only a benevolent Billionaire will be accepted by the masses.
Benitez favours defensive security over excitement, I've never denied this. However, Attackers do cost more, traditionally, and Benitez didn't have full control of transfers. That's a pathetic excuse man, come on you can do better than that.
