The Chronicle's latest corker about the massive club up the road. Some of them will actually believe this as well:

Sir Alex Ferguson 'considered' leaving Manchester United for Newcastle due to the fans
Speaking on latest episode of Gibbo's Corner - John Gibson reveals that Sir Alex Ferguson very nearly became Newcastle manager

Sir Alex Ferguson was a manager every football fan but those favouring the red of Manchester loved to hate.

His success and knack of winding people up made him unpopular with so many - with the underlying reason no doubt the jealousy of watching Man United lift so many trophies.

With it was no different - their dislike for the Scotsman heightened after the famous Kevin Keegan 'I would love it rant!' provoked by the masterful mind games on Sir Alex in the 1995-96 season.

Funnily enough months later, it's claimed he was on the verge of joining after Kevin Keegan walked away from his post.

John Gibson, who has covered Newcastle United for the last 60 years, recalls the 'sliding doors moment' on the latest episode of The Everything is Black and White Podcast.

Discussing Newcastle's 4-3 defeat to Manchester United on Boxing Day 2012, and the 'wee club' comment made by Ferguson, Gibbo said: "He loved winding people up like that - a bit like Jose Mourinho does now.

"Privately, he had huge respect for Newcastle United, and mainly for the fans.

"At the time when we had the Sir John Hall and Freddy Shepherd combo running Newcastle United, Ferguson was approached privately about coming to Newcastle United.

"He did consider it because of the fan base.

They very nearly had Sir Alex Ferguson as manager, and very nearly won the league and very nearly drew with Brentford.

It is very nearly 70 years since they won a major trophy

😂 that’s the biggest load of horseshit I’ve ever read. Not a chance he would have given leaving Man Utd for NUFC even a moments thought
It's in the Chronic man haway it's got to be true !? 😎
Surely even the half wits won't fall for that load of shite?......will they??

“he did consider it because of the fan base” 😂 I can only presume by that he was sick of probably the worlds largest fan base at Manchester United and wanted a drastically smaller one at NUFC. Haha just unmitigated bullshit man

What a load of absolute bollocks

Even if the Chronicle article were true, it's reminiscent of the bit in The Rocky Horror Show....

If only we had Sir Alex Ferguson as manager (Audience: BUT YOU DIDN'T)
If only we had gone on to win the league (Audience: BUT YOU DIDNT)
If only we had become an established Top 6 team (Audience: BUT YOU DIDNT)

They will be trying to replay Football Manager after derby defeats next ;)

What was the twitter name of that weird mag who went down to parliament and the premier league office after the Saudis pulled out?

Just wondering

What I find most implausible about the article is surely the football infrastructure the region has.

We all believe the reason why us, the mags and the Boro aren't more successful is because we don't have the glamorous, wealthy, affluent districts with £2m+ homes, and exclusive clubs, and high end shops as well as bars and restaurants that have menu prices that rival the cost of the bag that contains the card that will pay for the food. These places are a magnet for the wags of top world class players.

It isn't just that. All three clubs do not have the investment in the areas needed to compete at the highest level of course. But where else outside of a football club in the region can kids develop football skills to a level where they could become the next Ryan Giggs or David Beckham?

Here in Shields' I can cite Temple Park and The Rec next to my lasses place where kids play football outside of a football club and frankly both are not fit enough to do the job I think.

Even if SAF had millions and millions of pounds at NUFC he would never have gotten a tune out of the team similar to what the great Man U side of the mid and late 90s played. Us, the mags and the Boro will never in a million years ever see anything like Manchester United saw through the 90s.

They’ve won sod all since years before I was born. I’m 60 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

There's a, half decent chance they will lose their next 3 league games which will see those below overtake them or close the gap sending the skunk fans in to apoplexy.

Sadly, it will mean the end of Bruce and a half decent boss appointed.
