Takeover News/Rumours - Part 42

Yeah but doesn’t the way the wage cap is structured not give us much to play with? Whether the players out of contract are worth keeping is debatable but their replacements basically need to come for about 1.7k a week per head, max. Maybe the market will adjust as it’s a level playing field, but good luck getting much quality with that.
Release Graham, sell McGeady and Grigg. Bet that’s about £20-£25k a week back.

We can only speculate but clearly the club is hamstrung with this squad for 2 years with little scope to trade. Maybe he didn’t want to risk his reputation and does not need the money.

We’ve got about 10 first team squad players out of contract at the end of this season so a new manager gets to pick a new team virtually regardless of what league we are in next season.

Who’s going to buy them two players? The issue Sunderland have is if we sell players, because of the cap, the max enough another club can pay them is 2.5K a week.

They won’t take a pay cut of that level

With the salary cap we'll be extremely limited in what can be done in terms of new signings. The reality is realistic prospects will be a downgrade on what we currently have.

Our new friends in Russia, Monaco, Switzerland and South America might find a way of "dealing" with the problem

The previous system of % of turnover was a better way of doing it, but it needed tweaking to narrow down what was allowable income. It needed to exclude transfer income and owner inputs. In other words, a percentage of trading income only. The salary cap is ridiculous in a league with such wide disparities in income between its members.
Agree. I can see a salary cap being beneficial in a “closed league” that does promote or relegate teams. But in the football pyramid as it currently exists, it hamstrings those teams with the ability to actually pay their playing staff a wage that is within that club’s budget.
