Reinstate Sunderland Shipbuilding

I’m still waiting for someone to explain to me why the council are supposedly against shipbuilding in any form.

I can’t see why any council would be against bringing in jobs and investment.

Can anyone explain?

When I had dealings with SCC Business and Investment team a few years ago they couldn't have been more encouraging and helpful. They were pretty limited by legislation what they could invest in and do tbh but that was summat that stretched back to Thatchers days. The rules have been relaxed a bit since then I do believe though (hence the council were the drivers behind The Beam on the Vaux site).

What’s the rationale behind legislation limiting what councils can or can’t invest in?
Seems self defeating in a free market economy. This is something that should be abolished if it’s inhibitory

To stop councils going bankrupt like Liverpool did in the 1980's. Ultimately it's the taxpayer that picks up the tab if it goes tits up.

It’s in relation to state aid rules and regulations to remove potential for corruption or an unfair playing field / distorts competition.

I noticed on their crowd funding page the following that they are wanting to fund:

1. Design, print and distribute leaflets to all 127,000* households in the metro area of Sunderland (*SCC figure 2020). A print run of 200,000 leaflets including all distribution costs is £7,000.
2. Design and build an information and contact based website at a cost of £1,000.

Our funding target is £8,000 - and this has now been reached via a very generous private donor.

Therefore, we shall be continuing with this crowdfund to help us reach £15,000 in order to fundraise towards the cost of a market appraisal report which is required as part of our business plan / model.

Surely the market appraisal should have been the first thing to have done prior to have even stating the page? Could argue I suppose they needed to raise the money however if there is a legitimate business would they not have had some form of backing? I don’t see the merit in leafleting the entirety of Sunderland?
Exactly. What are the leaflets covering? What’s their purpose? Surely they should produce a business plan first, then tell all of Sunderland how this project is a goer, with the proof from their market appraisal report?

I'll tell you exactly what the leaflets will be for. Bashing SCC. This is just another angle from the usual anti-Labour lot. Got their stink all over it.

The council don't want to pay millions of pounds a year to keep the river dredged up to Pallion, for the sake of one small shipyard, and you can hardly blame them.

The venture could always stump up the cost, or pay to move the sheds to a dredged part of the river like the South Docks, if it's so cost effective.

I wonder if the mystery private donor was Len after his recent windfall?

Brexit the dream of tomorrow for folks who cannot make anything of today.

Its a real pity that our youth can no longer look forward to going down the mines.

Much as I would love to see industry and high paid jobs on the Wear, Tyne and Tees, we cannot compete with the Asian market in shipbuilding. Renewable energy is the way we need to go, not try to replicate industries that were successful in the past. They died for a reason.

You ever worked down a mine?

I've often thought manufacture and repair of offshore turbines would be credible business for the town.

What are the main companies and locations for this?
Off the top of my head i can't tell you mate

My dad worked at Wearmouth

He swore me and our boy would never go down the pit

Fair play to him. Its no place for anyone to go to work. I think you may have not fully understood the irony in my original post here.

This hanging on to the past, coal mines, shipyards, the Empire, is actually holding us back. Brexiteers talking about 'taking back control' that we never actually lost and harping back to the second world war and ranting on about 'patriotism'.

None of this is progress. Its regression pure and simple.
