'Classic Albums' that really aren't that good

As to be expected on a thread like this, no reasoning, too many WUMs, (either that or morons).
I agree but a lot of it is down to personal taste. I prefer to think of albums by artists that I rate that are not as good as others. I love Dylan, Carole King and The Beatles but I don't think the much acclaimed Blood on the Tracks, Tapestry and Sgt Pepper are their best pieces of work.

King hasn't done a better album than Tapestry man?
Agree with you on the others. Sgt Pepper gets kudos for the idea of it and how it pushed the envelope. Early Beatle s is what changes the world. Hard Days Night probably the best album.

It's about taste though isn't it? I prefer Fantasy to Tapestry but do love them both. Agree with your points about changes via The Beatles but I prefer 'heavier' stuff so liked lots on the White Album and Abbey Road.

Never really investigated Fantasy will do so now. You could argue she's a singles artist really - not the ones she recorded but the ones she wrote.
My favourite (apart from Its Too Late) is probably the original demo of Pleasant Valley Sunday which is even better than The Monkees.

She certainly was in the early days (60s). Fantasy is certainly worth exploring - has a bit more edge to it in terms of the lyrics and music in my opinion. A live DVD from Montreux has recently been released - really tight backing band.

Abbey Road by the Beatles. It’s an Ok album but not close to their best.
Abbey Road is an interesting one. It’s by no means the strongest Beatles album although it’s one I personally like.

There isn’t the tonal consistency of other albums, especially when you listen to songs like Maxwell’s Silver Hammer - a chirpy vaudeville homage to mass murder - (which I actually find kind of charming) in contrast with the Lennon and Harrison stuff, it’s easy to see The Beatles coming apart at the seams, as everyone is going in completely different directions. Then there’s stuff like Octopus’ Garden which is only saved by George Harrison taking pity on Ringo with a gorgeous riff while Lennon is busy taking the piss in the background. Meanwhile, Come Together, Something and Here Comes the Sun are stand out tracks and raise the bar.

There’s plenty to like and enjoy if you’re so inclined but compared to a lot of other Beatles albums it is a bit crap.
Astral Weeks- Van Morrison.
Trout Mask Replica- Capt Beefheart.

The music biz attempting a wind up or not?

Bowie pre Hunky Dory and post Scarey Monsters you mean.
I can’t agree with you on this.
