I grew up in mid to late 70s and had the best childhood in 70s and 80s. Decent council estate. None of us ever thought we were poor but you knew there were kids in the class who got free dinners and stunk a bit cause they came from the 'rough street'. No hols abroad, Scarborough every year, takeaway was a birthday treat. Mam hardly worked so you didnt need child care. No school uniforms . Life was simple ... then cheap and available credit meant more people could have a better lives materially. My child has much more than I ever had but none of the fun and quality of life I had. Now for most families there is so much extra expense. Kids junior school each year have a trip which in total over the 4 years is about 700 quid. I had Whitby, Lightwater Valley and Flamingo Land they have stayovers in France, Allendale go name but two. World Book day, Halloween, Xmas, birthdays etc they all add upAnd a lot of people do work hard to have those things. However it's a well known fact that people have more debt and less savings than ever before. The pressure from social media and having wannabe celebrity TV shows though has probably caused it.
