Odd decision by Smith to give Stokes 1 or 2 overs, while the young kid got smoked all over.

Smith is a strange one as you would think he would be world-class in all formats. Agree about Maxwell, always thought I caught him on an off-day when I saw him play.

Just a few illogical things happening, Smith captaining a T20 side, and spent the whole season opening, he didn't even do that for Oz.

I maintain some players get constantly picked due to the influence of who they know on the coaching bench.

Steve Smith is a world class cricketer, but there is no way he is one of the best T20 openers you could sign, when every cricketer wants to play in the tournament.

It’s a massive tournament watched by millions, it’s high profile and the biggest domestic cricket competition in the world!

Yet you still maintain teams don’t pick players to win games they pick their mates instead!!

Yeah I am sure when Man City and Liverpool go head to head their don’t pick the best teams to win the game the manager will pick his mate instead knowing he is not the best player for the job!

This is top class sport not a kick about with your mates.

So you think a player has never been signed for a top football team over the judgement of others just because the manager has worked with them before? :lol:

It happens literally everywhere, almost every club you could name.

Aye of course it has, but it’s because the manager knows he is very good player!! and thinks he is the best option in that postition to help him win games

You've misunderstood my point

I am not saying people sign players as a favour, to get their mates through the door for a laugh(although that probs happens occasionally), they obviously believe they can win games,

but people sign what they know and who they know, as you get a closed mind of ignoring other options, and sticking to what you know. They are all good players, but instead of taking a perceived risk on a player, you would get someone you have worked with before, rather than what could be the right signing.

You asked for football examples, just off the top of my head as I type this, Fellaini signing for Moyes at Everton, now he is a good footballer, and I am sure Moyes signed him as he thought he would win games for Man Utd, but if they widened his net, and opened his mind, he could obviously have signed someone better.

but it was written by every journo when the IPL first started, it was dominated by Australian and South African coaches, which is why players with basically no experience at first class level were getting massive deals, where as England lads outside the England bubble were not even getting discussed, as the coaches there had no knowledge of them.

Maxwell is a prime example, he got a massive deal as the coach knew all about him, fair enough, he thought he was a good player, but if the coach was Geoff Cook or John Lewis, Maxwell wouldn't have got that big deal would he when he'd play a handful of FC games in Australia? Not really sure why thats a hard point to graps, its true.

You seem to mention Maxwell a lot, but he has a tremendous record in T20s both domestically and internationally. Strikes at over 150 with an average of around 30, you’ll not find too many across the world with better numbers than that.

I kind of get your point, but I do think you’re using the wrong example to go about it. Maxwell would almost certainly get an IPL contract regardless of who the coaches are.

I am agreeing with your point. Just saying that it is harsh to criticise players for not excelling in all 3 formats when it is only the real elite that seem able to do that.

I see what you saying but you started this debate on either this thread on another talking about Root, Smith and Williamson.

And the debate of this thread you started by mentioning Smith.

None of them are close to been unknown or unproven, in fact all coaches around the world know all about them 3, the bottom line is if players are good enough they will get picked, Stokes, Bairstow, Buttler, Morgan etc are there because teams think they better players than Root.

And similar players like Smith and Williamson get a gig before Root, becuase whether you agree or disagree, teams simply think they better players than Root,it really is that simple.

Johnson's has a point, there is a tendency for teams to stick with players who are a known quantity. Hence Moeen Ali getting picked three years running by RCB despite being in poor form for England.

Root ruled himself out of this year's tournament because him and his wife just had a kid. He actually has a better T20I record than Smith and Williamson, but teams are less inclined to take a punt on players who haven't done the business in the tournament before. I also suspect Joe will want more than Moeen's 1 Crore.
