I love how like The Sun once reported some daft story about how Ashley stopped Newcastle going bust and all of a sudden it became absolute gospel on this board.🤣

The point was that Fitzgerald was using it as a stick to hit us with, when it seems at the time people weren't arsed.

Regarding the autumn on 1973 this was hot on the heels of the 1st OPEC Oil crisis, inflation was rampant and real wages were falling dramatically (the 3 day week followed in 1974). I suspect your average miner and shipyard worker had greater worries at the time than watching Sporting Lisbon or Budapest.

Not to mention the club put the prices up by about 50% for those games - it put a lot of people off, including me.

Were around at the time? I was only 2, but I am aware of the OPEC crisis and linked the two as this was right in the middle of it. Any other memories?

It really was the pricing more than anything else. To be fair, the crowd for the Sporting Lisbon game was about the same as League games around that date, although lower than for both the League Cup replays against Derby the following week.

1974? Yes the Mags had a pitch invasion when losing 3-1 in the Cup, which ultimately helped them to get through to the Cup Final, where Keegan said "I would love it, just love it if we stuffed Newcastle in the final"

Yes that was the game when Keegan really made his name....he ruined it in his next when he got sent off for fighting with Bremner in that feisty Charity shield game
