Remi Matthews

Matthews is an interesting signing.
Considering we already have a first choice keeper, does this mean PP doesn’t rate LB? Or has RM been brought in for competition.

Why would we leave ourselves with one senior keeper? Its happened about 3 halfs of a season in my 30 odd years of following SAFC.

Not happy with this one as would rather have has the lad on loan from Wolves or Chelsea. I think only 100 games for a 26 year old isnt incouraging neither is the amount of goals he conceeded last season. That said we've got to give him a chance and see how he does. Silve lining is at least he isn't Anlwick.

TBF he's played 127 games in total mostly out on loan. Over the last six seasons (given he's 26) it's been 0, 15, 27, 27, 20, 38.

Given the reluctance of clubs at higher levels to play their young keepers then I don't see too much of a problem with that amount of games at 26 - look at Martinez (101 total at 27) or Mannone at Arsenal who came here with less than 100 senior games at 25. Norwich for much of his period there had John Ruddy, Declan Rudd and then Angus Gunn coming though who they sold and then loaned back, then later on Michael McGovern and were a bit up and down so he's been patient but then had to go out on loan and start lower down. He might be shit, decent or good at this level - who knows, but look at Jon McLaughlin - pissing about for Bradford and Burton mostly in league one and two before a season in the Championship and a year at Hearts and he was older.

As for the goals conceded - FFS come on. For the first few months they were playing a team of kids week in week out.

He's ok. I'd like to know if O'hara was looked at, he's is a league above and would be able to play championship football.

I know a few Coventry lads (that arent bellends) and they rave about burge. Made an error in a game and got dropped. John McLaughlin wasn’t immune but seemed to make the saves that looked impossible. I’d personally go after Craig Gordon think he’s a free agent and still got a few years in him what a come back he made

Can see your point woth first paragraph but many of the goals we after the kids were benched. I did say they may not be his fault but to swap one of the best keepers in L1 for statistacally the worst is not looking great business at present. Time will tell. I hope he succeeds or Burge keeps him out and is outstanding.

But keepers like Alec Chamberlain (until Sorensen) had clean sheet records here, statistics are good and all that but they don't make up the bigger picture and shouldn't therefore be relied on solely and from memory someone else has said his shots to save ratio was up there with the best in the division - he's only statistically the worst in goals conceded.

Bolton were shit and in disarray even after they brought a few players in but 27 of those goals were in the first 6 games - they never conceded more than two goals in any of their last 11 games and only conceded more than two on three occasions from December onwards in games Mattthews played in.

Clearly one of their better players was the keeper. Now the question is and this is where you rely on scouting and knowledge and not just stats - was he good for them because he's a good reaction keeper and was therefore called into a lot of action in a Kelvin Davis kind of way or was he good for them in general handling and all round as a goalkeeper, did he look a step above what he was playing with? The answer to that is non of us know

I live in Cov, most fans I know have him down as a good shot stopper but otherwise pretty shit, certainly weren’t disappointed to see him go.

My mate knows and says he is a good signing.

I hope your right and he is good but it sounds like making excuses for someone who based on facts available would seem poor. You could say its just goals conceeded which is poor but like goalscoring for strikers thats kind what a keeper is judged on.

I know quite a few cov fans given where I live and they dont rave about burge at all, good shot stopper but average in every other department. I've never heard one cov fan rave about burge. The keeper they replaced him with marosi they do absolutely rave about and say hes a huge upgrade on burge. Agree with you about Gordon, but I think he will be looking for a back up premier league contact for about 20k a week

Hopefully it works out that way.
A keeper who is 26 and hasn’t played 100 games yet tells you how good he is

Who are we talking about here, Matthews has played 127.

But it's not just the one statistic or thing they're judged on is it, but it's what you're doing. Otherwise you wouldn't get the likes or Arsenal signing David Seaman from QPR to replace John Lukic when they had just been Champions and were barely conceding goals or Everton signing Pickford when he'd just conceded shitloads. You're using one fact - that being goals conceded to make him sound poor. That completely ignores that he faced 175 shots on target to Jon McLaughlin's 95 and he saved 113 to JM's 70. So using you one dimensional look at it, he's saved 43 more shots last season in two more games than Jon McLaughlin. People who are sensible also look at circumstances and context.

Using a side who were touch and go whether they were going to go to the wall till six weeks into the season and cobbled together a team in two or three days, were in turmoil and came up massively short to compare to us and the position we were in is hardly like for like comparison. If you just look at the stats we'd have never signed Kevin Phillips, Niall Quinn, Thomas Sorenson etc, yet Will Grigg should be an absolute superstar for us at the moment. Stats only give you a small picture.

This is the sort of thinking that excuses strikers who don't score "but he's a great team player and recycles the ball" its bollocks really. Football is a simple game, attackers create and score goals and defenders keep ball out of the net. If we sign a keeper who can't keep clean sheets we'll not get promoted its as simple as that.

A goalkeeper who is constantly peppered will concede goals. They need a good defence in front of them.

Gordon signed for Hearts weeks ago - back to where it all started for him. Agree, though, amazing to come back like he did.
