[1st Test] England v Pakistan (Old Trafford)

Should be a cracking series this, certainly makes working at home a bit more interesting. Concerned about the balance of the side the way it is but suppose we are limited without the overs of stokes.

Plenty of sides manage with 3 quicks mind. We’ve got 3.5 with some stokes, and Root as a second spin option, so should have been sufficient.

Two leggies in the The Pak side and batting we're last, I smell trouble.

Anything over 200 will be a decent first innings IMO for them here.

Glad to see Anderson & Broad opening the bowling. Time will come for Archer but he’s far better option as first change for now IMO.

England 4/7, no strong feeling either way about this one, but would expect that to trade bigger at some point and would not be surprised to see us win given we’ve the advantage of having played three games already.

There wasn't a huge amount of spin in the last two tests but I expect we'll get pretty much 5 days and quite a bit of sun in the last few days, it depends how long the first innings last.
Does anybody think its harsh on Wood to be left out 3 games in a row when he's had one poor match. Took 13 Wickets at 13.5 in South Africa blew away West Indies in his previous match.
I think it's as much about nursing him as it is any judgement of his performance at Southampton. Fully expect him to play the next match.

He's probably the one you have to look after most with his injury record. I do think you only need 1 of him or Archer when playing at home

I do a bit, but his overall record in England is quite poor and then there's his injury record to factor.

Archer is flavour of the month though even though Wood has arguably been the better performer in the last few months.

Didn't really have much sun to dry it out though. If it does touch 29/30 degrees on Friday, it will turn.

Days 2 and 3 will be the best for batting, think we're going to need a decent 1st innings lead to win this.

Agreed, that's what I meant about the first innings, if they last long enough there'll be spin eventually. If they're over quickly I don't see there being much more spin than in the last game.

I like Archer, I think he will come good. But he has been poor this summer. He’s also acted like a moron by breaching the bubble. Whilst not comparing the act to Hales and Clarke, he does seem to have got off lightly.

understood on Wood and injuries. But he’s missed 3 matches in a row now. I’d have played him here

I think he probably will come good also, but he was poor in the two winter tours and hasn't offered much this summer so far either. The selectors got it wrong with Wood by picking him for the docile Southampton pitch and then leaving him out for the next 3 tests on an Old Trafford pitch which is usually quicker.
