The re-branding of caravans

Its amazing how many people get wound up about holiday homes. Caravans , motor homes. ,statics ? Does it matter these people are contributing to our knackered economy while snobby bastards spend in the EU we just left whilst polluting the airways. Stay loyal spend UK this year any way you like .

Sounds like someone has had too many Fosters in his charva-van

Just seen a fellow SMBer refer to his caravan as a holiday home on another thread.
I’ve stayed with Eurocamp a couple of times and they are “chalets”.
We all know what they are, you’re not fooling anyone. Are people that ashamed of living like a pikey for 2 weeks of the year?
to be fair, if its static and needs to be moved by a special truck (not a car), then its a massive stretch to call it a caravan in the first place.
Special trucks move entire houses in other countries. Nobody would call them caravans.

I'm not sure what the right word should be. Holiday home is a bit silly, "lodge" seems to get used a lot, but for me, those are made of wood and don't have wheels.
Its a bit of a gap - which is probably why "static caravan" - an oxymoron if ever there was - has been used for so long.

:D Going abroad is being disloyal to your country now. This place gets dafter by the day.

Nah. They banned tents from my site from this year. Getting a bit up their own arse tbh.

Think I know which site you’re on. We used to camp there regularly, loved it. But you could see the tide was turning when they started getting those lodges in.

I’ve been looking at motorhomes- now that’s what you need.

Little sports cars stowed underneath , slide outs to make it bigger. Fancy lighting inside and luxury bedroom.

Big telly the lot.

Mind the really nice ones cost more than a house.

the trouble with them is where do you go with them? They are so big you cant physically fit them onto camp site pitches over here. I'd rather go for the 5th wheel instead

That way you still have the advantage of having the car to drive around places rather than having to move the motorhome everytime and with the slide outs the are massive inside. Certainly not a cheap setup and you can get MUCH bigger ones in America where they have much bigger pickup trucks. You could even import one but you have the hassle of electrics and the same pitch size issue as the big motorhomes.

That looks impressive- and you get a geet big pickup too.

That is pretty impressive like.

The whole packup and having a massive vehicle to get down country lanes every time you nip out is what puts me off a motor home. (Well that, the cost, the storage, the cost again, oh and the price). I think I'd prefer a caravan.

as I say american ones go to a whole different level, but those UK built 5th wheelers will be easy to tow, very comfortable inside with everything you need. Trouble is you need 70k+ for the caravan and 20k+ for the car.

Wow, that is like towing a bus. I think that will exceed the length of most standard campsite pitches and god knows how you corner in it.

There is part of me fancies a small camper van/day van. Give us a table to sit around, have some lunch and a small kitchen to make a cup of tea on long journeys and for driving somewhere to do astronomy stuff. Even those come at a fair price.

Are you implying that 5th wheel setup is a better fit for UK campsites than a US style RV?

I'm sure there is a site or two you'd maybe fit one in, maybe

the american sites you'd go to with one would have far bigger pitches. Cornering would be as bad as you'd expect with the pivot being on top of the rear axle

I think the problem with small campers is the lack of a toilet. Sure you can get portable ones but its a lot less comfortable.

Most people only use the toilet for midnight wees. Use the campsite facilities for cable laying. Nee fun emptying the thing.

True, opens up the options to have your own though. Im going away on friday until tuesday to a site that just had electric, and waste and water points. Only costing £10 a night.
