1. Defund the police

In the US some states spend 30% of their budget on policing. New York alone spends more than half the UKs entire budget for a third of the population. The spending on police there is absolutely insane, the police are practically another military.
That money could be spent on tackling the poverty that causes crime. On jobs, infrastructure, health care etc. Etc.
It could be spent on more community policing and trust building exercises.

2. Capitalism

In the US economy working people have the absolute worst deal of any major country. No holiday, health care, maternity, workplace rights. And the race disparity is ridiculous. In Boston the average hire family has 31,000 times the wealth of the average black family.
Thirty-one thousand times as well off.

You just can't run a civilised society with this kind of exploitation. It has to change and be reformed.


3. Close prisons

The US has 4% of the world population but 22% of the prison population. They put far far too many people away for too long and the sentencing is ridiculously racialised. The prison population is used as cheap labour too, so it's another form of imprisoning blacks and getting them to work cheap - which undercuts every member of the American working class. Prisons are immensely profitable enterprises in the US so there's a money incentive to lock people up as long as possible. It's an absolutely sick system that should embarrass a civilised country.


What you need to think about I'd say is this: of you're criticising taking a knee because it's inappropriate and meaningless, you can't also criticise making demands which are meaningful. You have to be consistent.

Is this a substantiated fact? I doubt it. There is strict and oft-implemented legislation against any form of employment discrimination. I have sneaky feeling you are wrong.

You can have all the legislation in the world, but when a person is "overlooked" for a position because they are black, it would be very hard to prove that discrimination had taken place.

My brother lives in LA, he is an ophthalmologist and his wife is a pharmacist, she gets ten and he gets a few more.

Most get health insurance through work (who have it) and according to my brother the excesses are reasonable and the service is excellent. That doesn’t help those who don’t have it, I’m not advocating the US system.
