Does Ashley therefore not deserve some credit for convincing him to stay whilst in the Championship then?
You're on crack if you think it was Ashley's charisma that convinced Benitez to stay. Does Ashley deserve praise for not getting rid of Benitez? No. Just like you wouldn't credit a grown man for not vomiting into a fireplace.

RE the bit in bold, no but as i mentioned he never stays around long enough for the academy to come to fruition anyway, so what difference does it make to him? it was a soundbite used that resinated with the fans to get them onside.
Ok, walk me through this, Ashley has refused to significantly invest in the academy or the training ground for the entirety of his stewardship, Kinnear spoke about it, Charnley has spoken about it, Pardew, Hughton, journalists, ex players. They've all spoken about the facilities needing work. But Benitez saying that the place needs investment isn't an accurate assessment of the situation, it's just a way to get the fans on side?

Rafa Benitez painted a picture in the media that he wanted a big project with NUFC from scouting to academy, training facilities to transfers yet in reality, bolted for China as soon as his contract ended.
You few are making out like Benitez couldn't wait to get away from the club and only stuck around for the cash, right? He's a liar, the journalists are liars, the ex-pros are liars, but it's Mike Ashley that's telling it true? Try to be objective for a second and think about what you're saying. Everybody else says X, court-proven-liar and all round arsehole says Y... and you're buying Y? I mean, good lord.

That's not really a radical thought process is it? Considering you use the term 'trophies' when it's literally the loosest possibly way you can use it, so is spinning it a tad.

Trophies?

League cup
Eredivisie title

Which of those didn't happen now?

Benitez is better than Pardew but who was more successful?

Gullit achieved zero with Nufc but doesn't get a fraction of the stick Pardew gets who actually brought you some success. All because Gullit is a name to feed your inferiority complex with the real Elite clubs. Gullit for all his failings was a name you could boast about.

Pardew got you 5th and he is ridiculed.

Do you really believe he stayed at Newcastle in the Championship for a project?
i would imagine like anything in life he based his decision on numerous factors and not just one single factor.

I imagine it was a combination of the project, the money, the fans, proximity to family etc etc

Means nothing. Success in football isn't guaranteed. On paper he was more than good enough for nufc when appointed.

Achieved more than Gullit who I don't seem to recall many moaning about when appointed.

Then I'm sure you'll remember that he'd won the FA Cup in his first season, and at the time of his falling out with Bates which led to him being sacked, he had Chelsea 2nd in the league, in the league cup fina(which they won)l, still in the cup winners cup (which they went on to win).

There run was
West brom
Liverpool fair enough
Leicester
Wimbledon
Middlesbrough

Hardly a difficult path to the final considering Liverpool finished 4th. Did Chelsea finish 2nd after he left? If not I don't know what relevance Chelsea winning those cups has when he wasn't there.

I mean, all of this you put forward and I could just fire this back.

It's impossible to use this as a variable when the opposition faced and your own team is different from the season previous.

I cant be arsed to carry on this debate. There is countless valid posts that myself and other posters have made but they just get instantly dismissed as they aren’t pro Rafa Benitez.

Pointless having a debate when there is little to no reasoning.

It’s always going to be that way until Ashley goes, thats clear.

Not content with forensically analysing Rafa Benitez's games in charge of Newcastle United at the end of the 2015/16 season, we're now moving onto Chelsea's FA Cup run of 1997.

Come on, man.
Oh dear you didn't read the bit when I was talking about expected chances and goals conceded. Not team achievements 😂

Is the opposition faced different and the teams put out different or not? You can't apply that logic to just xG and the like and not apply it to anything else, man.

Besides which, Ruud Gullit got us to an FA Cup final when the FA Cup still meant something.

It's proving NUFC fans are happy with names.

A worldwide name of Rudd Gullit one of the worst managers in your history but hardly is spoken of because he was successful elsewhere.

Remind you of anyone 😉😂

I can honestly say I think the real issue that many of you have with Rafa is it simply bugs you that we were really happy with our manager.

When he didn't keep us up had NUFC fans called for his head, had we of been after his blood ever since and when he finally left had we have been calling him a money grabbing mercenary the exact same people arguing he is an over rated mercenary would be sat arguing he is a world class manager that loved Newcastle, was desperate to stay and us ridiculous mags were to stupid to appreciate what we had.

It's not proving that at all, see my edit.

Gullit did the honourable thing as well to be fair and fell on his sword, I'd say that earns him a lot of rope as well.

Not cow-tow to the owner (this one's for mike), play down our chances when we went to a cup tie against Morecambe, blame the fans for surrendering a two goal lead to lose 3-2, blame science or our players being too working class for poor performances like Pardew did.

There are more like, but I feel that's enough.

People we dislike - Ashley, Pardew, Allardyce, McClaren etc are lauded on here.
People we like - Keegan, Benitez, Shearer etc are absolute zeroes on here.
Bobby Robson, we like him but we're not allowed to

Pardew took a championship side into Europe.

Gullit took a side that had been in the Champions league to 13th.

Pardew gets stick because he isn't a fashionable name

Didn't realise Cabaye, Tiote, Ben Arfa, Ba, Cisse, etc played in the Championship.

Pardew also took that same side and nearly relegated them the following season. Depends how you want to spin it tbh.

Ah I'm sorry. I could have sworn they signed for newcastle while Pardew was manager. I'm obviously mistaken

Not really a 'championship side' anymore when a sizeable section of the playing staff has been replaced by better players, is it?

Did he nearly relegate that same side the next season or not?
Benitez
McClaren
Gullitt
Pardew

Can we analyse Allardyce next?

I say we analyse Dalglish's FA Cup run of 1986 tbh.

What about 98? Struggled to beat Stevenage iirc

Seems a little too relevant tbh.

Probably be hammered for wanting a recognised name then, too. Especially with us finishing in the top six three seasons in a row previous.

Wonder how far we are away from the 'mags chomping all day on here' carry-on?
