There were 3 charity matches in the 1890s iirc. Paul Days mentioned them in one of his books and posted on here, I have kept it somewhere.

Me granda used to say there were three teams in Newcastle and we used to play em all through there for a fee with them keeping the rest. This kept them all at the same level which playing one of them three times wouldnt. Eventually they figured out what we were doing.
