True. He lived ower the fence at Thornhill

Me granda used to say there were three teams in Newcastle and we used to play em all through there for a fee with them keeping the rest. This kept them all at the same level which playing one of them three times wouldnt. Eventually they figured out what we were doing.
It would have been Newcastle west end, Newcastle east end and another? Newcastle dead end?

Iirc the club that became nufc was east end. We played the charity matches when they were skint and we turned down more lucrative alternatives to help them out.

In the mid-70s Hartlepool were in deep money trouble at the end of the season.. They asked NUFC, Boro and ourselves to play friendlies to raise money for them. We were due to go on a world trip and could not fit it in and so rather than send a reserve side we spoke to the League. They said they would get back asap after we asked for permission to a solution we offered. Alan Hardaker was the boss then - hard man from Hull - and he rang Ron Linney direct on his private line. I was in his office as was Bob Stokoe. Hardaker just asked Ron to repeat what our suggestion was. When Ron asked for his opinion Hardaker went mad - laughing and saying this was unbelievable. Of course he granted permission. So went sent a cheque to them, as a donation, for £10000. Not bad in those days. The Pool was always a good club - some clubs looked down on them but we never did.

Sunderland played a number of friendlies with Newcastle to raise money and keep them afloat in their early days
