Six times since the war you’ve had bigger average attendances than us since the war. What’s your point?
Have you seen your catchment area it's completely understandable, and you have had nowhere the shite history we have had.
Moot point. Similar for most clubs that there was spike in the 90s, the late 70s and through the 80s were low for most clubs compared to the 90s onwards.
Sunderland also had low attendances then. Look how high Sunderlands attendances jumped in 97 with the new ground. Extra 15-20k supporters
At least you haven't denied it like the rest do.
Tbf if you look back throughout history they have a bigger (not better) support than we do, probably 4th or 5th biggest in the country. That's down to an accident of Geography and the sheer size of their catchment area more than any sign of loyalty though.

They have a free run of it all the way up past Berwick then across into Cumbria and huge parts of Durham and that's before you even consider their immediate catchment area. We are sandwiched in the middle of them and Boro. The numbers we get are incredible all things considered.
Concidering a quarter of our catchment area is the north sea and have had a horrendous record over the decades I thing we do really really well. I defend our support against them arseholes who lord it over us with the attendance trophy that they've won.

that's all I have said

This isn't going to go down well on here but I'm a realist and I speak the truth
Nufc historicaly get more through the gate than safc.

Does it mean they have better fans NO
Does it mean they have more fans YES
My take on it is simply this they have a slightly bigger catchment area, they also are the biggest city in the North east which brings more tourists and more students who are more likely to go to the matches

I'm proud that I live in the North east, south tyneside as it happens and I genuinely believe that we have the most passionate football fans in the country

This is it for me. I can’t and won’t knock their numbers for the sake of a local pissing contest.

The River Tyne is a natural geographical barrier. We have pockets of fans north of it, but we share much of the areas south of it with Newcastle. They dominate in some areas too e.g. Gateshead. Sunderland only have an overwhelming majority in Sunderland old town and East Durham. Maybe Houghton-le-Spring and round there too.

To actually get close in numbers in many seasons is testament to us.

Then you factor in there relative ‘success’ over the last 25 years or so. Multiple European campaigns, Keegan etc. Their fans haven’t been put through the mill anywhere near as much as ours in my opinion.

Agree with most of that, apart from catchment area - they have a massively bigger catchment area. I'm from (and in) South Tyneside and it pains me that I have to shop online or in Newcastle for anything 'specific', they've got a great city and that also helps their attendances.

It appears so.

Not once, or twice, but thrice.

I think we under sell our support base! Gateshead has massive red and white support. I know there's plenty of fans in the Wardley, Heworth and even Felling (I'm writing off Pelaw and Bill Quay).

Same with South Tyneside. Boldon is / was definitely Sunderland majority. The only difference being is Sunderland supporters don't feel the need to wear a football top 24/7.

That's just factually incorrect tbf. It's more than that.
Check it out. It’s a fact.
Very similar though until the 90s
I’m not slagging your support at all, it’s very good both home and away, but what I can’t help having a nibble at is this 92’er shite. We’ve always had decent support ourselves, a bit lower than normal sometimes, but when there was a natural dip in attendances countrywide.

There was a survey done in the 00's of all Premiership clubs supporters. newcastle came out as the least loyal fans, the least number of non-white season ticket holders and also surprisingly the highest number of gay supporters. Don't shoot the messenger I'm just stating what the survey found out.

From 116 seasons, in 100 of those Newcastle have been on the top 10 in the country for average attendances, 5th highest of all time. It's a myth pedalled on here that Newcastle had no fans before 92. Totally stupid really, but people like to cling on to it.
Mainly since 1992

I’m sure you’re going to cite the exact survey shortly to prove your point rather than just spout unfounded bollocks.

That's what I'm saying. Go East between Newcastle and the sea and they've got several big towns where they draw their support from. The area from where they draw their support is huge compared to ours so whilst their support is is always going to be bigger due to them having a bigger pool to draw from I'd say ours is the more impressive.

With regard to the attendances...around 10 years ago, me and a geordie workmate done a full take off of all attendences since records began and came up with Sunderland been in the 28 thousands and Newcastle been in the 32 thousands. Very little in it but since the emergance of the Premier league and all the 92ers you can clearly see that since then it did put thier average up above thier norm for the previous 100 years or so. I you took the take off up to 1990 only I would say the average attendances would be a lot closer than the 4'000 that I come up with

Just seen its almost 100yrs since they were champions (1927) add that to 65yrs since won a cup huge club though

Of course not but if I could remember who did the survey I would. It was a massive survey at the time, quoted in all the best tabloids and some not so.

28k v 32k when you consider populations (and I'm talking about Sunderland and Newcastle not f***ing Washington, Gateshead etc, etc..) then we probably have better support.
