Newcastle could buy their way to success but have shown low virtues/morals welcoming them. They’re on a different trajectory to a lot of teams.....
on the flip side SAFC is going bust but at least we haven’t sold our soul in the process. We just won’t have a football club in the future.

I happened to be on the same football team as Pete Graves a few years ago. One of the biggest bellends I've ever come across in my life. Two left feet too.
Moot point. Similar for most clubs that there was spike in the 90s, the late 70s and through the 80s were low for most clubs compared to the 90s onwards.
Sunderland also had low attendances then. Look how high Sunderlands attendances jumped in 97 with the new ground. Extra 15-20k supporters

He can't he's talking shite we have superb support and so do you. Historically You get more through the gate and that's mainly because I think you have a bigger catchment area with Gateshead, Newcastle, Northumberland North tyneside etc

To be honest mate it was in very poor taste but in pre-social media days I'm not sure if anyone outside of Sunderland and the immediate area knew anything about it.

Tbf if you look back throughout history they have a bigger (not better) support than we do, probably 4th or 5th biggest in the country. That's down to an accident of Geography and the sheer size of their catchment area more than any sign of loyalty though.
They have a free run of it all the way up past Berwick then across into Cumbria and huge parts of Durham and that's before you even consider their immediate catchment area. We are sandwiched in the middle of them and Boro. The numbers we get are incredible all things considered.
I'm not talking about the capacity.
For example in 95/96 a first division title winning season Sunderland averaged 17,482. A season high of 22,047 and a low of 12,282.
The next time in that division 97/98 with a new stadium, the average for the season was 33,492 with a high of 40,712 and a low of 24,642.

From 116 seasons, in 100 of those Newcastle have been on the top 10 in the country for average attendances, 5th highest of all time. It's a myth pedalled on here that Newcastle had no fans before 92. Totally stupid really, but people like to cling on to it.

In 96/97 we averaged 21k pretty much max capacity simply because we were playing in the premier league. The lower attendances in the first division we’re obvious because we were in the first division. Mags attendances we’re up because of their premier league status. No doubt about that. You wouldn’t have seen the increase in attendances if it wasn’t for Keegan and the ambition of the club.

Your lowest in the new stadium in 97/98 was 12k higher than your lowest at RP in a title winning season. 6k higher than the lowest in the premier league at RP.
Sunderland, like Newcastle and many other clubs saw a spike in attendances in the 90s after Italia 90 and the Taylor Report. Whatever the reasons you attribute it to, it happened for nearly everybody in the top 2 divisions.

I'm not even having a go at Sunderland's numbers here. Its not even in doubt they are well supported.
But the lazy clichés about us having no support pre 92 is just bollocks.
