If you want a vanity project, there's nothing like owning the country's biggest club in Manchester United. Trying to bring back the fergie days glory.Maybe they want a vanity project, much like the Abu Dhabi lot did when they bought City?
Whilst I agree it's strange, an article posted yesterday stated that they'd looked at Man u, Chelsea & Newcastle before settling for the latter.

Eh?Millions lol, there are barely two million people in the entire northeast, most of which are in north yorks, then take out those who support other clubs...
They will be once they start prurtesting....Millions of screaming jordies...
A lot of their fanbase and their local MP took a stance that Ashley should go partly because of his buisness practices. Took moral high ground against him and now this is happening appear to have egg on their faces. Not so much sour grapes from us more pointing out yet another clear and obvious error in their mind set.
Edit... they do have form for rewriting history so should be fun to watch this with a regime with such a horrendous record.
Definitely this.
Onwurah, Lavery and even Corbyn all got in on the act.
Alex Hurst, chair of the Newcastle United Supporters Trust and editor of the fanzine Truth Faith:
"If – and it’s still an if – this takeover happens then it will bring back hope to hundreds of thousands, if not millions, in the north-east.
The involvement of Saudi Arabian wealth in the takeover is not a concern right now and ultimately any new owners will be judged like all owners are judged – by how they treat the fans and how they run the football club. Getting those two things right is the most important thing."
Malcolm Macdonald, the former Newcastle and England striker
"I don’t think it [Saudi Arabia’s human rights record] will be a big issue for Newcastle supporters."
Miles Starforth, Newcastle United correspondent for the Shields Gazette
"The ethical/human rights aspects of a Saudi funded takeover have been on my mind, and I think there’s an awareness on Tyneside of the issues raised by Amnesty International. That said, the overwhelming majority of supporters have welcomed the proposed deal."
Kevin Christie, writer for the fanzine the Mag
"I also understand the misgivings regarding sportswashing, but I’m willing to give the Saudi PIF the benefit of the doubt."
Jacque Talbot, freelance journalist and writer for the fanzine True Faith
"Many people have decried the potential takeover but, as supporters, we’re allowed to be glad that Mike Ashley is going while recognising that our club’s money will, in part, stem from a regime that’s fallen foul of human rights atrocities."
I'm posting this without comment. But asking the question - how are far are you willing to go for your club to be successful? What's OK with you? (Again, asking the question, not making comment.)
Heard (sensible) mags say that plenty while the fat has been was manager even when in the championship heard the football was pretty crapI'm a Mag mate. I'm just being realistic. Our performances on the pitch this season have been terrible. Our League position does not reflect how bad we are.
Relegation is still a very real possibility if this season i sever played out.
It's a weird one as I genuinely don't think the people involved in this deal should be allowed to pass a fit and proper test but if it was us getting bought would I be up in arms about it? Don't think I would and don't blame the fans.
What I do find funny though is the fact that they used the workers rights angle to justify their ridiculous protests and actions against Mike Ashley and even had an MP bring it up in the Houses of Parliament for them to now seemingly turn a blind eye to the atrocities the Saudis have brought onto millions.
I wonder what their tame MP will make of the new ownership ( if it happens ) her party generally have made quite clear their stance on human rights generally and the Saudis in particular. Indeed her new boss was a human rights lawyer of some note. I’m gambling we don’t hear a f***ing squeak out of her. Ashley is a twat but I can’t recall him ever having someone murdered, beheaded, or stoned to death. Not to mention lopping off various body parts.A lot of their fanbase and their local MP took a stance that Ashley should go partly because of his buisness practices. Mag maths mate. They make diane abbot look like an astrophysicist.Millions in the north east? What the holy fuck
What about those of us that have always been vocal about human rights, aside from football?
it’s not solely a human rights issue - MBS ordered the murder of Kashoggi. It’s staggering that someone with that on his record could ever be allowed into football.
Pure hypocrisy
