As an impartial observer of North East Football this reveals a fundamental difference between the two clubs and supporters. Undoubtedly this fuels the impression the clubs forge on a national scale and in the media.
There is a romantic notion with Newcastle that captivates people. Difficult to pinpoint it but we see it in the mythical number 9 shirt, the associations with transcend figures such as Keegan and Robson.
The “atmosphere”, which has been largely absent over the last 10 years but it is almost a trademark association with Newcastle that somehow and some way is still attractive to a billionaire prospective buyer.
That is what got under the skin of such a renowned super coach as Benitez and beguiles people who want to buy into it.
As north easterners we all recognise Sunderland has a the same traits and associations but it never comes to national or international prominence in the way it does at Newcastle.
it’s a peculiar phenomenon, really, that somehow has outlived a 13 year reign of asset stripping under Ashley.
