Places you felt most on edge in your life

Ended up in Toxteth by accident. Strange seeing streets all boarded up. Didn't know where I was until I saw a street sign with the L8 postcode.

Hopped on a bus pretty sharpish.

La riding the metro from long beach to near hermosa beach. Didn't realise it took you straight through Compton...

Then San fran. Wandering about mortal at 2 in the morning getting hassled for change. Decided it wasn't a good idea and flagged a taxi. Taxi driver decided to have a barny with 3 crack heads in a people carrier. Ended up in a car chase with them and me basically lying in the footwell. Dived out the cab and ran in my hostel.

Last one Liverpool. Working round croxteth and Toxteth and all those shitty areas. Realised how dodgy it was when I had to get through a security door for almost every shop.....

Which pubs? I'm from Horden like and even though its rough as fuck I've never had one bit of bother when out and about at night.
Peterlee Labour club to Horden Catholic club. It was in the Horden numbered streets.

Were you in the ‘Coundon Squad’ who had a flag at the front of the fulwell end iirc?
I’m sure it said “Conlin squad”
It was in the north stand early years of the Sol

In a urinal in a bar in Glasgow, packed full of Aberdeen’s finest, happily getting on with the job in hand when two characters appeared at my side and asked if I was a Rangers ****.

Talked my way out of it but my arsehole was clacking.

Found out later that one of them had just been released from prison for holding his girlfriend hostage, the other had a list of FV convictions as long as your arm. So that was nice.
I'm on a few weeks break working in Glasgow and practically everyone that worked for me had been in prison. I sacked one lad and he got put away for murder 4 months later.

This was the same in Manor Park also huge squads of lads with neckerchiefs on most street corners. Sad thing was most mornings you'd walk past freshly laid flowers on the way to the tube. The Olympic regeneration improved it slightly from what I've heard
The flowers were fresh and the neckers ironed afterwards?

It’s an amazing place, but my god you had to have your wits about you. Only place I’ve been and seen multiple people being robbed in the street and nobody batted an eyelid.

I visited in 2015.

Yep, agreed. Was there for c.18 hours in about 2012 - too many incidents in too short a time. Great pizza though. I would go back but would ensure I had everything planned before going there. Not the best of cities to go wandering.

Other rough/edgy places - parts of Washington DC, Brownsville (Brooklyn) and the streets off Times Square in the 80s. Where we stayed in New Orleans in 1989 - god knows where it was, pretty central but what a hell hole.

Lagos and Marseilles docks, Porto Alegre and Balikpapan.

Oh and throw in Gastown, Vancouver.

Downtown Eastside just to the east of Gastown is horrific - worst drug problems I have ever come across. Was there in 2017 and it was a real eye opener, way worse than the US in the late 1980s when I lived out there for 12 months. The alleys around East Cordova Street and East Hastings are horrific, open drug use, people just strung out. I’d say you would be relatively safe there as the addicts are way too wrecked to do anything to a passer by. Terribly sad looking place - a massive contrast to much of the city and its setting.
