Gender equality at festivals

Because of how outdated the industry is, aye. Its levelling out all of the time these days and it's about time it was reflected on festival lineups too. It'll inspire a lot of bairns growing up as well to see female artists and bands up there on a level platform with men.

In rock/metal I don’t think there are enough either female fronted bands or bands with females in to do this even if the organisers wanted to.

Not really - you're talking about shoehorning female acts onto a bill because they're female rather than them being any use. Which is fuckin stupid.

Yes really. Sport is nothing like music, there are physical differences. It's not a valid comparison in the slightest.

They wouldn't be being shoehorned on either. The majority of male bands are shite, no idea why they're more deserving to be on a line up than their female counterparts. There are plenty of good female bands and artists that are left off line ups in favour of what I assume organisers think are 'safer' options.

More nonsense.

So Aretha Franklin never inspired anyone? Tina Turner? Carole King? Stevie Nicks?

People need to get this idea out of their heads that equal representation will 'inspire' some perfectly balanced utopia. It won't. Men and women are different. Nobody is stopping anybody pursuing what they want to pursue, but the fact is there's something inside people that makes those individuals tick and ultimately determines what avenues they choose to explore.

If you're good enough and you sell enough you play. There's no conspiracy here.
It's not so much about chucking just anyone on the bill though. Part of me is pessimistic about there being enough quality acts to go around in the short term.

But I do think there needs to be long term fostering of an environment where there's opportunity for more acts featuring women to get to a point where they're deemed good enough and sell enough.

Is a 50/50 gender balance at festivals going to achieve that? I don't know. It's a more positive step than shrugging your shoulders and thinking it'll sort itself out though.

Is it not? People pay for what they want.

That environment already exists and has done for a long long time. If they're good enough, they sell. They play.

So what?

Shall we stick ten lasses teams in the Premier League to balance it out a bit? It's a fuckin' nonsense man. If you're good enough and you sell enough you play. There's no conspiracy here.

Yes the music business is a male centric world, but that's just the nature of the beast. Men devote more to it. Men pick up guitars to impress girls. Men get all nerdy with audio gadgetry. Men become obsessive. Men buy the product.

Nee woman's ever had to pick up a guitar to pull a bloke.

aye because all lasses are too busy practising their ironing and looking at lovely frilly dresses.

Why though? Is it because girls grow up seeing that guitars are for blokes? Would them seeing women with guitars be more of an inspiration for them to have a go?

How sexist to think that a woman can only be inspired by other women. See, you can spin this shit anny way you want.

If they were actively saying fuck off to female acts because this is a boys only treehouse I could understand, but that clearly isn't the case.

I think this forced equality is actually detrimental to women and the feminist movement as it makes people think gender equality issues are just silly.

It's always the same when the focus is on equality of outcome rather than equality of opportunity.
