RAOS: Huddersfield in for Hume...

You'd hope we'd not make the mistake of selling a young player integral to the way we play two seasons running.

Hypothetically you see him being away in the summer for that price, but not mid season.

He gets caught out defensively

Yes many defenders do. He is a class act going forward and at only 21 he's still learning and developing. He was fantastic against Wycombe at the weekend. He's going to be a top talent.

I recall posters on here regularly having a go at PVA, it was endless. He signed for Palace for £14m and is still in the PL, whilst we're in league one.

Why exactly?
It might keep us going if we don't go up are stuck with Donald. If we don't go up then we'd take half that in the summer.
I don’t believe this rumour for one minute BUT let’s play along.

You’d seriously sell him for £3.5m ?

A local lad, product of the academy and starting to look like a canny player. He has the raw attributes that could make him a decent player in a higher standard of football.

If we got sold him, we’d likely replace him with another De Bock type signing. Haven’t we learned anything?!

Don’t sell our better players
We're in League One. That's top dollar money for someone unproven at a higher level.

The whole thing is made up, but every player has their price and 3.5m is probably the price of half our first team combined at it stands.

This. Good attacking full backs are massively in demand. I'd rather have him than a "safe and steady" defensive left back, fuck me we've got 3 f***ing centre backs, if he gets caught out defensively we should be fine, it's going up the other end where we need some overlapping, pace and crosses. He will no doubt improve the defensive part of his game as he gets older. Wouldn't be selling him now, not when we know we'd replace him with shite and he's actually been important in our recent resurgence

If James Justin was worth £6m after 1 season in League 1 and One and a half in League 2, surely Hume must be worth similar at a similar age.

Not saying I’d want to sell him at the price mind.

top talent is Hume that’s for sure and just needs some good coaching and let’s hope our lot can provide it. If he continued and improves he will be in big demand no doubt.

He’s had a handful of decent games. So on the face of it £3.5m I would be ok with selling.

However a couple of things make me suggest that we shouldn’t:

I don’t trust our recruitment team to replace him with better or more potential.

And if the fee was spread out over the length of the players contract. A 4 year contract and we could receive £700,000 a year which doesn’t allow a lot of improvement fee wise or the likely pittance of a wage he’d be on

We would be mental to turn that fee down, no chance would anyone bid that for a defender who can't defend.
What a load of shite, he's one of our best players. 'Defender' is an arbitrary label you've ascribed, and his job in the team isn't primarily a defensive one. The entire formation has essentially been constructed around getting Denver Hume on the ball and into forward positions. He's absolutely essential to how we play. He's fast, technically good, provides good width, and is generally the one bursting up the field with the ball skipping past players for fun. Last year we cashed in on Maja - another 20 year old who was irreplaceable - for a small fee and it buggered our season, and this would probably do the same, as Hume is absolutely irreplaceable at this level.

On the 'nobody will pay big money for a defender who can't defend' trope, see David Luiz (50m, 30m), John Stones (50m), Shkodran Mustafi (35m) and a plethora of ex-Arsenal and Brazil CBs. Luiz and Stones are good footballers, but the can't defend, and these are actual defenders - centre backs, not wingbacks. I'd also pint you in the direction of Patrick van Aanholt, as the exact same things were said about him, and we sold him for 15m 3 years ago (having signed him for 1.5m - a 1000% profit) and he has been a PL regular ever since, and a regular in the Dutch squad.

Anyone got an idea of when his contract ends?

That could make a difference. If we are going to keep/develop him with the hope we rise up the leagues or sell him for a massive fee we should be looking to tie him down to a long deal.

I'd sell at that price, presuming we're stuck with no money owners.
Even though he's been a massive part of our recent turnaround. Who would we replace him with! False economy IMHO. If his head has been turned and he wants to go, it's a different matter, but we would be mad to sell if he's happy with us.

He was shite according to this board before the Wycombe game. Now he’s worth more than 3.5 million
some on “this board” thought Colback was a better prospect than Henderson. Others didn’t. Hume is the best player at the club and our best outfield prospect since Henderson. Donald will of course sell him.
