VARguments

The authorities are now managing to reduce the actual game to a business (I mean the playing side of it, not the whole professional football package, which has always been a business).

Millimetres should matter in business – in engineering. In design. In construction. But not bloody football. It’s the purest of games, unlike cricket or rugby or NFL (sports I also enjoy) which have a multitude of rules and natural ‘down times’ between plays and thus are more suited to technology like this.

There’s a beauty and an unpredictability about it because it’s a game devised by humans. Played by humans. Codified by humans. Watched and loved by humans. And, until now, officiated by humans.

If you don’t see that it’s ripping the heart and the passion from the game, of f**king over the people who matter the most – the match-going rather than armchair fan in particular – than you can blame yourself when we are watching matches in 30 years time taking place in stadiums with piped noise and avatars rather than fans.

I fail to see a single redeeming quality in it. The only saving grace is that we are unlikely to encounter it in one of our plays any time soon.
Eloquently put. VAR will be the death of football, just as I predicted years ago. It works to a point with stop-start, rule intensive games like cricket and rugby but football isnt like that. When the fuck will people realise there is no such thing as black and white, and shades of grey actually make for better entertainment?

At last the penny is dropping. You are lucky you're getting a limited look at VAR in just a cup competition . You still might have a chance of vetoing it for the league. It ruins the spectacle for the fans, I f***ing hate it here.
I knew this shitstorm was coming. This was a year ago. We're now getting a look at VAR in all it's glory.
It is ruining the game. That Wolves goal should have been lauded throughout the land instead, despite zero protesting from Liverpool it's chalked off. The game as a spectacle is being killed by it.

I fully agree with 'clear and obvious' Referee errors (Maradona hand ball or Englands goal that was a yard behind the goal-line would be good examples if VAR were available at the time) but this offside by a nats fart is crazy :(

It’s awful, you’re not gaining any advantage whatsoever by having a finger offside. Yet another shite thing kicked off by sky and their ridiculous over analysis of every goal. Before their computer generated bellendery started pointing out someone was a fannies hair offside, you couldn’t really tell until it became obvious.

If they insist on keeping this ridiculous f***ing thing, they should be allowed a quick replay to pick up clearly wrong decisions. No computer generated lines to assist, no freezing the footage and moving it back and forth. One replay and if you can’t tell by that give the advantage to the attacking side. It’s a f***ing shambles.

But what if it's a foot and a cm? Or a cm short of a foot? Surely you just have the same issue.

I'm not sure how your analogy is relevant.

How the fuck do so many people miss the point. My father who is a reasonably intelligent man couldn't fathom that his idea of defining offside by 'daylight' would still amount to milimetres.

Needs to be like the tennis etc where the manager can have so many challenges for a decision to be looked at. It's too stop start in it's current format and has killed the momentum of the game

Can you imagine the arguments about what constitutes 'obvious'. If you think it's bad now it would be nothing compared to the fiasco that most on here are suggesting!

I've always liked this idea but how would that resolve the offsides we saw this weekend?

Your suggestion would be a whole lot worse. Managers would be on the pitch lynching the officials and each other about whether or not it was obvious. People aren't thinking this through.

Same as when decisions go against a player in tennis who has used their challenges . Tough shit you used all your challenges. The refs and linos should be competent enough to spot offsides. It was never as big as a problem until VAR anyway

No matter how precise VAR claims to be it’s still guesswork. The position of the players bodies when the ball os struck isn’t an exact science and the timing of the ball being played is another best guess scenario.

The offside rule will never be a perfect thing - with or without VAR, the biggest issue is that it’s killing the spectacle and flow of the game.

Watched that Back of the Net show on Amazon Prime and Michail Antonio, who apparently is known for his wacky goal celebs, has said he’s not celebrating goals anymore cos he doesn’t want to look like a tit in 3 minutes cos his eyelash was offside.

If anyone's interested, there is a petition asking for the scrapping of VAR:

VAR doesn't need scrapping it needs to be used better by people with a f***ing brain and also the ref to use the pitch side monitors

Also a wild guess for once the petition wasn't made by a Liverpool fan ?

That’s the thing for me. We aren’t overruling ‘clear and obvious’. They’re sitting for 2/3 minutes using Hawkeye to decide if someone’s stud is 1mm offside. Ive got HD sky on a 55 inch 4K telly and even zoomed right in I couldn’t tell if the lad was offside. Seems like there’s a VAR check on easily 50% of goals at the minute and it’s murdering the flow of the game.

Bollocks, shit loads of goals chalked off haven’t even been contested by the players or manager.
I assume 82 is your birth year? If not I apologise but If so you’ll be a sky generation fan. One who can’t remember the days offsides weren’t really an issue unless they were massively blatant. Sky have made them an issue with their ridiculously OTT analysis which in turn has forced the authorities to bring this shit in. Personally I’d rather scrap var altogether, allow less cameras in the grounds and ban sky from using anything but the replays from the half way line cameras to analyse goals. None of this shit is ever going to happen of course as sky and it’s billions run the show. They don’t care about the fans attending. They’re catering for armchair technology obsessed fans the world over and football is far far worse for it..

How would a ref looking at a pitch side monitor solve anything? Surely he'll be looking at exactly the same things the people looking at the VAR headquarters would be

I've no idea mate, it baffles me. In fairness, I see the point the others are making. Yet they don't seem to realise that you're still going to have the same problem!

I still think there should be a 'linesmans call' section. If its clear then call the true result. If its not clear go by what the linesman said. Like the umpires call in cricket
