we dont really have a boycott anymore do we...a player who could bat for days adn who had the patience and the belief that he didnt need to hit everything

presumably the press would slaughter him now for being dour or boring when sometimes you do need that bloke who can just keep going

Not just the press. Nick Compton scored an inning anchoring 85 off 236 balls in Durban and Bayliss comes out and criticises his scoring rate. Employ a short format coach for test cricket and you will get short format batting.

Almost like your the bloke in your avatar.

It's funny that being in the top 3 in test match cricket requires this. Yet so many players just cant do it.
Precisely. It's a total different sport to white ball cricket nowadays to be honest. In years to come the vast majority will be 1 or the other.

Very true but as I said a couple of days ago they have a very good bowling unit.

I think so do we mind, obviously there have a better spinner, as far as batsman are concerned from 5 to 11 think we a lot better, nowt much between the sides imo and a lot to play for, we can still win the series.

Aside from Trott and Cook the only other example I can think of who genuinely knew how to open in the past 5 years was Compton.

Leach against Ireland. Bayliss has accidentally stumbled on the answer a few times and still doesn't get it.

This Macho posturing nonsense of attacking everything does my head in. Takes far more skill and stones to occupy the crease for hours.
This why I always thought Gooch was amazing, could play both games with skill.
Why would you bowl on this wicket whens its sunny
England batting mentality is all over, chance to twist the knife.

Id kill for a pujara type charcter to be coming in at three for england. Or chanderpaul. Hed do

Theyre a dying breed

Yes, positive decision that could have had England 4/5 down before lunch if Burns was caught.
Sorry, but he'll be out for ~35 as usual. Seems to get himself closed off and vulnerable to lbws. Only a matter of time.

Hopefully reverse psychology though.
Thought it was the right call to play him ahead of Curran, will probably end up looking like a 🍌in about 30 minutes

That type of brick wall opening the batting would be a start.

I don't think Curran versus Denly should even be a thing. It should be Curran versus Bairstow and Denly versus Hain or Sibley.
