FIRST ASHES TEST: Edgbaston

As much as we have been awful and deserve to lose, a lot of this game changed the moment the umpires let the Ausies change the ball.

No doubt we will hear that the Anderson injury cost us, fair enough it wasnt ideal, but the aussies came into this game with only 3 quicks

In fairness it did cost us a fair bit. Meant Root bowled himself and the part timer to preserve the others (as he was unable to rely on Ali). Then there's the Smith factor.....

The replacement had a shine on it LOL

This place 😂
To be honest mate you’ve been saying this all test and the people who were cautious about England’s chances have been proved completely correct in their worry.

It’s not just some emotional knee jerk, England are demonstrably poor at the basics when it comes to Test batting right now and without Anderson, barring Archer being a complete phenomenon, the attack is the weakest it’s been in a decade. I don’t get why people can’t see that.

You do know that Australia are allowed to try and win and can be better than us.

Broad bowled well.

Give owa. That's just one of many pivotal moments. You could equally point to Anderson breaking down in his first spell or Ali bowling like he was playing for Romania.

Nothing has gone in our favour from day one, The balls arnt swinging, the pitch is flat as fuck, giving no aid to our seamers. Add Andersons injury to that and it's been a disaterous first test. Plus Roots naivety as captain adds to our woes, the way he set fields to Smith were scandalous, it just signalled to Smith that we had no idea how to get him out.

Disagree. We've had a bit of bad luck with the Anderson injury and the Aussies persuading the umpires to change the ball but beyond that, both sides have had about the same sort of luck but they have took advantage. Smith has obviously the changed the game but other than Burns, who has looked like sticking around to get a match dominating score? Ali was woeful, Lyon has took advantage of favourable conditions. Root with his 50 got in and set then threw his wicket away, Roy got in in this innings and had a brain freeze. Stokes did the same with his 57. Aussies deserve to win this.

Didn't say he didn’t. But he’s not an attack in himself is he, he needs others around him and there’s no sign of that outside Archer just now and that’s a hope/prayer more than a given . Moeen seems totally lost.

Even taking aside the absence of wicket takers aside the economy of the attack has been poor. Siddle hasn’t been a threat on this wicket but he constructed the run rate. We batted all day Friday but posted a totally benign lead. Aus scoring at 4 + an over since 122-8.

Indeed. People keep saying we had the game in the bag when we had them 8 down and should have finished them off for 150. Cant have it both ways. Smith has had an absolute blinder and he and Lyon have been the difference.

England take wickets = great bowling. Australia take wickets = shite batting. England score runs, great batting. Australia score runs = shite bowling.
I said facing the seamers, with the older ball. They took 1 wicket with the new ball nearly 2 hours ago. Lyon has 3 wickets.

Just looked, you didnt say that, which was why i pointed out it wouldnt get easier against the spinning ball. (You might have thought it though tbf).

Edit: Reading it again, it might just be the way I read it, so over turned on review :-)
