FIRST ASHES TEST: Edgbaston

Bat properly, see what happens.

Still a slow pitch, Lyon was pushing it through last night, so get forward and when he drops short whack him. Ball is 7 overs old, get out of the first hour only 1 or 2 down and it's on.

Our batsmen have their strengths but very few play with soft hands. Roy, Buttler, Bairstow in particular. It was a struggle watching Roy. These players in particular are going to need to find a way.

I can’t see Roy making it to midday in truth.
or wides and bouncers allowed yeah was kinda tongue in cheek mate :)

Sarcasm and humour has never been his strong point marra, don’t worry.

If you cant do it with your hands, do it with your feet. Get moving, get outside the line.

There’s nae “should” about it. I mean they might. It’s not impossible.

But England not batting out a draw in 6 years and the current rate of drawn tests in England being 1 in 33 suggest it will be a freak episode if they do.

So it was 2009 the last time England batted out a draw at home. Not only that but it’s the only time in the past decade England have batted out for a full day. I got confused there. Auckland was a draw but we didn’t bat the whole day out for it.
They batted a full day in the first innings mate

That’s not what you said.

In a post and broader discussion about drawing tests specifically, I think the context was pretty obvious. Not to mention that the phrase batting out is basically never used except in reference to surviving a match. Certainly not in respect to posting a total to chase when in a position to win a match as was the case in day 2. But yes I forgot to add “for a draw” in there, unlike in the previous paragraph and posts in general around today’s play in which England need to bat out for a draw.

Mind you it’s not like batting for a full day hasn’t represented an achievement as of itself for this team over the past few years like.

More grim reading re England’s batting:

Have lost all their wickets in one session (not innings) 4 times since 2016. Prior to 20-6 it happened once in 78 years.

Only 3 players in squad have first class average average of 40 vs 7 players in 2013

Had 18 different openers since 2012

Note I obviously will be delighted if England manage it but I can’t get my head round people saying it’s probable at all given the actual evidence available around how this team play in pressure conditions, or even in good ones

What about against Australia though? Big wins against them in 2005, 2013 and last time wasn’t there?

I knew about Headingley and Moeen, but we lost, so when was the last time we batted all day for a draw? Cardiff 2009?
TB can play two way. If the overhead conditions are right it will swing lots (as against Aussies when Broad and Stokes took a quick hatful) otherwise it's flat as it was against India a few years back and the commentators were bemoaning a boringly flat deck.

Fair enough. The fact remains that they managed to bat a full day in this Test. Which is very much an achievement given what we’ve produced in recent memory. Hopefully we manage it again.
