FIRST ASHES TEST: Edgbaston

Not looking good for today. I really dont think that our batsmen can bat defensively for a full day on a wicket that's turning (although Moen Ali made it look like the worlds firmest grass while bowling yesterday.)

I suppose we could go all out and chase the win, but we may not make it through the first session if that was the strategy
It’s time for England’s so called best players to step up today.
Roy and Burns out for less than 150 and were fucked imo.

Get out there, smash Lyons out the attack and don't dangle your bat outside your off stump and we'll be good

A bit of Monday positivity
If they go after Lyons on that pitch, the Australians will have it won by lunchtime. He’ll do far more damage than Ali did yesterday with his absolutely toothless performance, where overall, Root and Denly looked more threatening than he did for most of the day.
Root and Stokes are the key. Only two that can bat properly in this situation.

Stokes looked absolutely knackered yesterday afternoon. Given his performances in the World Cup and the relative lack of respite he’s had, there’s more than a slight possibility of running him into the ground before this series is through.

It's probably good for England's batsmen that the total to chase is so great, so scoring runs is almost irrelevant. The mindset for today is to make the Aussies work hard for wickets. Let's hope they can grind out a draw.

Pitch still looks like a pudding.

The difficulty is that we are too far behind to win it, so are batting to save, but the batsmen can't just play that way as they need to make shots still rather than defend all day.

Unless they go into their shell (or Lyon has a blinder) they should get to the end of today at 0-0.

There’s nae “should” about it. I mean they might. It’s not impossible.

But England not batting out a draw in 6 years and the current rate of drawn tests in England being 1 in 33 suggest it will be a freak episode if they do.
I’d be interested to know the last time we batted all day for a draw too (at home), would it be Cardiff back in 2009?
So it was 2009 the last time England batted out a draw at home. Not only that but it’s the only time in the past decade England have batted out for a full day. I got confused there. Auckland was a draw but we didn’t bat the whole day out for it.

They will have run by lunchtime if we go on the back foot anyway. Standing back to Lyons is suicide. He'll get you lbw, outside edge or through the gate. Get forward to the the spinners. Attack. Get into his head and make him think instead of being predictable. This is where we miss a Pietersen-type batsman who would just batter him around the ground.

Bat properly, see what happens.

Still a slow pitch, Lyon was pushing it through last night, so get forward and when he drops short whack him. Ball is 7 overs old, get out of the first hour only 1 or 2 down and it's on.

Wait, talking shite sorry. We did bat that whole day out in Auckland.

Well, that’s 2 times in a decade then. Don’t think any of this team were involved (besides Anderson obvs).

We batted 143 overs in Auckland. It was over four sessions.
Anybody mention the weather yet, could that be a factor?

Dry as sticks.

Love it if we manage to save it just to shut my dad up. Already peddling the 5-0 shite. Has City already relegated after a narrow 2-1 at Swansea as well and I thought I was a miserable pessimistic sod!

If we lose at Esgbaston, you've got to fear the worst TBF. I thought before the series Australia would edge the series as they've been building a team for English conditions, and we have nowhere to turn in terms of preparing advantageous wickets. The injuries, selections of out of form players and inability to remove Smith have only sought to reinforce my belief.

It's going to need some big, characterful performances from someone and I worry there is little left in the tank after the world cup.
