FIRST ASHES TEST: Edgbaston

Well, what a shit weekend it's been.

TMS on at work tomorrow and let's see if we can salvage a draw.

Harsh. I’d say that Root, Stokes, Broad and Anderson and then Warner, Smith, Hazelwood, Lyon, Starc and Cummins are all excellent test players
Had forgotten Hazelwood. Wasn’t counting Anderson as I doubt he’s going to be involved. Root and Stokes aren’t there for me yet in the echelons of the best in respect to temperament. Fair play about the others though I was off there. Annoyingly they’re Aussies.

Root is definitely an excellent test cricket. Averaging nearly 50 in 80 odd games

Very sorry I was driving.

How many times have the failed to bat out a full day to lose in the last 6 years?

In modern test cricket the game is often over after 4 days. You don't get that many draws in non rain effected games.
Oh aye but I don’t think that changes the reality and difficulty of the situation. England don’t have the batting capacity to bat for long enough in either innings and haven’t for years. Even when we won in Australia it was almost entirely Cook that allowed us to occupy the crease fo any length of time.

Aye but I think the captaincy has hobbled him badly

Have to say well done to Smith a tremendous player. Now we'll see if they're more than a one man team but I'm never confident with England defending for a day. Hope they at least make a fight of itand lay down a marker for future Tests saying in effect "you might beat us but we're going to make it as difficult as possible", I don't have any faith they will though.

Both Burns and Root dug in very well first innings. I agree that those 2 apart we haven't really got any real grafters but saying that Stokes is in very good form and he has matured into a good test batsman who can adapt to the match situation.

Yeah never mind not knowing if you wanted to do it again because of your tarnished reputation. As long as the elbow brace was off you're ready to do it again

Jason Roys footwork

Mad how far being a slogger can get you in todays game.
It is quite depressing aye. Certainly the art of opening at least seems to have died a death.
I think tomorrow will be exciting still, Aussie aren’t sufficiently dangerous for this to be a fair accompli or England so bad that a collapse is inevitable.

But the fact is England haven’t batted out a full day for ages, they’re batting to save a match at a ground which is traditionally a guaranteed win in a series where Aussie only have to draw to keep the Ashes, and our batsmen aren’t famed for their patience or fortitude, so it’s not looking likely.
