Durham Promotion or England Ashes Win?

It really is a hard one for me.

I live abroad and can't really get to England in the summer very often, but do have more opportunities to watch England away in winter.

So I guess it's the Ashes.

If I lived in the NE, I'd probably be a Durham member and then the situation would be reversed.

Yeah that’s fair, both in football and cricket from a very young age, have been too busy playing both sports myself to really support and be connected to either Sunderland or Durham, that coupled with been a patriotic person has meant country in both sports has always come first for me.

I also think both football and cricket national teams are the for the people of the country and don’t connect them to the FA or ECB

Are you from the NE? Out of interest. Just wondered why country cricket and/or Durham have never piqued your interest the same way it has for the majority on this board.

Obviously the vast majority of us love England too and it’s a very close 1 and 2 for most in terms of the way we view what is more important.

For me it’s probably changed throughout my life, but at present I’d far more rather sit at Chester-le-street on a weekday afternoon watching Durham in Championship action than be in the middle of the Hollies Stand at an Ashes Test.

I've never really understood the country over club sentiment. You choose your club, usually from a young age. Most choose due to family links (My Dad is a Sunderland & Durham) fan, we follow our clubs closely, wear replica kits, go to matches etc. We don't dictate the countries we are born in, I've nothing against people who are patriotic but there's usually little affinity to the players in national teams, particularly football.

Ashes for me.

Obviously, would love for both to happen but I watch pretty much all of Englands games and only follow Durham rather than support them really, as I don't get down very often at all.

I still remember at 12 years old the excitement of Essex bagging their first trophy with the B&H Cup and then the holy grail of the County Championship.

When the John Player Sunday League was shown live on BBC2, a year or two before that, John Arlott described the team as "joyful runners-up' and I so wanted that to be proven wrong.

It's stayed with me, the desire for the county championship, so it tops an Ashes series win for me. Though I'd love to see England do it if only for the entertainment value the Aussies wondering bitterly how they had as bad an away record this century as England.

Yes lived in East Durham area all my life, county cricket is something I am interested in in the same way football is something I am interested in, but like I said earlier playing rather than supporting has been more of a interest for me.
I did go and watch Durham at Lords in the final when Gibson got them 2 wickets in two balls and very much enjoyed it.

But that was probably more of the weekend away with the lads on the drink than any alliance to Durham tbh.

But England in both sports is a lot more important to me than Durham and Sunderland always has.
The ECB's actions in 2016 made most of us think carefully whether we could support England and Durham equally.

See that’s something I have never understood this assumption that supporting England is also supporting the ECB.

It’s not for me, you can love your country and your national team but still dislike the ECB
I have always seen the national team as the pinnacle of the game and as the people’s and countries team rather than ECB or FA.

Ashes EVERY time. Love the Ashes more than anything in the universe. And that includes me two fabulous kids.
If they’re reading this I’m only kidding boys 😉
Ashes is nothing to do with ECB it’s the fans, tradition, rivalry, respect .. it IS the game of cricket imo . Other countries are jealous of it we must all cherish it.

In cricket I'd agree that the national team is the pinnacle, but I really don't think it is in football. I think its way harder to win the PL/CL than the World Cup, for instance, and most national sides would get destroyed by top club sides in football, but not in cricket.

I'd usually favour Durham over England, and if the choice was the County Championship/T20/One Day Cup, I'd go Durham, but just for promotion I'd go for the Ashes, as I don't see promotion as THAT big a thing. Not compared to winning something at least

Yeah can certainly see that point, however I do think national success is always better and bigger.

Sport is normally back page news, but if England won the World Cup in football it would be front page news.

I also see it as what gives the most glory. England hadn't won the World Cup before so was delighted to see that, but it would hardly be the first time we've won the Ashes, and there is always chances to win the Ashes again, doubt winning a home World Cup will happen again in the next 50 years, say, likewise with Durham and the T20 or the County Championship.

Similarly for the football, I can't see Sunderland getting a chance to win silverware in the foreseeable, so I'd much prefer to see that personally.
